Just a little preparation. There are a few "captain save-a-hoes" on this board who take offense to anyone that discusses working girls as "Tica(s)". They are going to come in and try to explain to you that not all Ticas are working girls.
Kind of like basic algebra, If some Ticas are Prostitutes, are all Prostitutes Ticas ? The answer is no.
A Costa Rican prostitute is in fact a Tica. A Nicaraguan prostitute working in Costa Rica is a Chica. All prostitutes are Chicas as well, well except a few , those are trannys.
They have a petition going to change the name of this board to CostaRicaChicas.
Guilty (except for the CostaRicaChica bit

) Yes, it's a pet peeve of mine. Kudos to the quoted poster for explaining it soooo clearly - a TICA is a woman of Costa Rican nationality.
A hooker born in Costa Rica is indeed a Tica. So is a female doctor, dentist, government official, cook, accountant, executive, housewife, waitress, driver or attorney. As one of those who points out the proper usage of the word "tica" I should observe we're trying to be Captain Save-A-
BRO.
Just like we advise first-timers not to walk around drunk at night in San Jose (or Jaco) with dollars falling out of their pockets. Or never pay up front. Or not to leave a working girl unattended in your room with your safe open. Or to get Diacort if you have an attack of the trots.
It's unfortunate to see a fellow monger get into an altercation with locals over a misunderstanding - his continued use of "tica" as a synonym for "prostitute". It's happened more than once.
You've taken the time and trouble to do your homework about Costa Rica and the mongering scene. Why cause yourself potential grief out of ignorance? Using "tica" for "hooker" also marks you as a n00b. Or a rude, condescending asshat.

P.S. Did you look into the
Copacabana Hotel? Right around the corner from BB. Warning - it is NOT a quiet place, but some of the working girls stay there.
As mentioned above, the Beatle Bar working girls are a bit more hard-core and businesslike than, say, the Sportsmens' Lodge regulars, and it's not easy to get them to budge from "cien". The same woman might charge you 60 at the HDR (many SJO girls work Jaco on the weekends during high season). It helps if you speak Spanish.
Good luck and enjoy your trip!
