There is an old restaurant on the road between Jaco and Quepos, about 15 miles south of Jaco that has some of the best Italian food I've ever eaten, and I've eaten in Italy. If you are in the area, the Castillo Monterey is incredible with real authentic Italian food as well as seafood and other things.
The place is out in the middle of nowhere. It is on the east side of the highway and looks like an old Colonial Mansion or castle up on a small hill overlooking pasture and ponds filled with ducks and crocks. Has the word "restaurant" spelled out in big white letters under it. Great outdoor dining with a great romantic atmosphere.
Twice last week stopped there with clients and we all enjoyed everything they served from the garlic bread to the banana bread for dessert!

Here's their Website with contact info--the site is under construction so there's not much else. Beautiful-appearing venue: http://castillomonterey.com/

Thanks for finding that site! One note, the phone number on the site is different from what I have. From a business card they gave me, I have 2778-8933 where the website has 2278-8933. Tried both and busy at one and no answer at the second...???

As far as phone numbers in costa rica go, you should be able to figure it out pretty easy PVT! You have been here long enough.... all prefixes are by area and you can tell where they change by the signs on the roads.... as an example from where I live, all Playas del Coco numbers are 2670, all Liberia numbers are 2665 and 2666, Communidad, Guardia, y Palmeria 2667.... just a thought as if phone numbers from Jaco start with 2278 I would be pretty confident that the phone number of the restaurant is also 2278-XXXX

PVT took me and my friends there and he's right on the money with this place.
Not only is the food great but the atomsphere and the view is just stunning.

I highly recommend this place as well. While we were eating I was thinking of even taking one to go so I can reheat it later for that day.

Stopped in there today and the Nica chef they had has moved on... He was talking about it last time I was in there but he is now gone. Went ahead and ate my normal lasagna and it was good but not great like it was. Now, can't say it has great food and the price for what you now get is just too high IMHO. Hate to post bad news and I really feel the loss, but I can no longer recommend this place
