I think Greengo's medicine wore off about two sentences into this one. The first two lines were good, but then it went way, way wrong. Thanks Greengo, made me laugh for the first time this week.

There has never been a Krispy Kreme in Costa Rica. We had a Mister Donut that sucked ass (but does well in El Salvador). The best donughts were in the old Yaohan, but even those paled to legit donuts.

Dunkin Donuts has been rumored a few times; Panama and Honduras both have a ton of DD shops.

Franchise fee is a cool $1million CDN plus the building/supplies on top that. Gotta be a money maker in SJ....I envision long line-up...if u build it - they will come...

Don't bet on it - I'll spare you the saying about making a million in CR (start w/ 2M is the punchline  )

If you have a franchise fee of a million (even using Canadian $ thats very close to 1M US Dollars) - and I'm not looking for a fight but thats WAAAAAAAY higher than McDonalds, BK, KFC, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, and every other franchise I can come up with by exponential numbers - are you sure about those figures, because they don't seem right to me. Too high.

Regardless, you have to count on the local market for business, and not just expats - so I doubt - unless you measure payback in terms of 50 or 100 years    Anyone will sink that kind of money in CR!

I don't think that's accurate. Most franchises require you to have a net worth of at least 1 million, but the franchise fee is usually 75,000-150,000.

Agree - normally the verbage goes, "Net worth of 1M, w/ 250 -300k liquid" And you may be even high on the Franchise fee; a few years ago McDonalds was like 35k (its a fee so its all pure profit to the franchisor).

If I was more motivated, I could do some research on the Tim Hortons chain - the reasons I don't:

Like they usted to say about Barry Goldwater (some of the younger members are saying Who the heck was he..." In your heart you know he's right" - well in mine I know Myrivers is WRONG :)

I don't give enough of a damn to do more reasearch, although for a short post, there was a lot wrong with it

I don't think he was serious and if he was, before investing 1m+++ in CR, should put it in Tresury's - after having his head examined first

Isn't Google a wonderful thing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to purchase a Tim Hortons franchise?

The cost of a full Canadian franchise varies from $430,000 to $480,000* (CDN$) (plus all applicable taxes). At least $144,000 of the franchise cost must be unencumbered (cash or liquid assets), in addition to $50,000 in working capital (also unencumbered). The remaining amount may be financed through the chartered banks, upon approval of a franchise.

* The cost of a Tim Hortons license may exceed $480,000 in certain locations due to higher development costs.

NOTE: Satellite franchisees (i.e. kiosks, malls, petroleum sites, airports, universities) are not available to a franchisee as their first location.
What is included in the cost of the franchise?

Included in the cost of a franchise is the following:

all equipment, furniture, display equipment and signage
8-week training program in the Oakville, ON Training Centre
a store opening crew to assist in the opening of a Tim Hortons restaurant (for a maximum period of two weeks)
the use of all Tim Hortons Manuals
right to use the Trademarks and Trade names
support from the head Office personnel

Who is responsible for the costs to develop the location (site and building)?

The TDL Group Corp. assumes all costs associated with the development of the land and building. It is not an option for a franchisee to develop the property or own the building.

Hey, you nailed it!

Still, a far cry from the 1m Myrivers posted - he should have checked his facts a little more closely!

PS Still way to much money to invest in selling donuts in CR IMO!

I would think that investing any amount of money to sell donuts in Costa Rica is way to much.

As to Tim Horton costs in Canada the price may not be that unreasonable considering they provide the land, building, equipment, furniture etc. The downside off course is that they are the landlord so you are always a renter never the owner of the building.

Maybe....

"The TDL Group Corp. assumes all costs associated with the development of the land and building. It is not an option for a franchisee to develop the property or own the building".

Unless "development" is Canadian speak for aquiring/owing the land and building (obviously not an option if you open a 2nd franchise in a Mall, for instance) - I wonder if they actually own the property vs just preparing the building for a franchisee - I could be wrong, but when you factor in the cost of purchasing commercial property, I just doubt that is included, especially when you factor in all the other stuff they do provide.

At this point, its just mental masturbation, as we agree 100% it would not be a good fit in CR - but I would love to see a Dunkin Donuts open there!

I've read your posts over the years; its nice to say hello to another (former in your case!) South Floridian :)

I don't know what the big deal is? Every bakery has donuts, just not the selection of 50 different types (obviously cause they aren't super popular). With that said, I think a Dunkin Donuts (like they have in Panama) would do pretty well in San Jose.
