In my opinion and flying at the 40,000 foot level, Is this, that staying at the DR is neither good or bad. It is just different. It is what it is and to say anything more is just plain short sighted. It is not the nicest, cheapest, biggest rooms, most modern, closet to the beach or any other expletive. It just is what it is.

The Grand Pink Place and the belly of the Beast as far as Costa Rica is concerned.

True many may not like the place and many have good reason. But it should not be thrown out. Dont throw the Babi*s out with the bath water. Just because the SL has better food or Amistad has cleaner towels or the Dunn Inn screwed Boyd. Just like all the other hotels spoken about on this board. No one hotel fits all of our needs, desires or wants. And the DR is no exception to this rule. Words like Never, Best and cheapest are very subjective and all have different definitions to each and every member on this board.

I would love to say that staying there, no more pegs you as a this certain type of person, or that type of person. Your own actions will do that for you. But, to qualify that again from the 40,000 foot level, that may not be 100% true. Staying there will give a 1st impression of what you are about. But that is only the 1st impression. Your words and your actions will do all the rest at setting into a Chicas mind what you are about. If you want respect, show respect. If you don’t care than don’t worry what others think. It is really that simple.

Now, you, as a person who has very few posts on the board you might be new to the game you might not? You may have all the experience you ever need. You may have more than all of us. But, just on the odd chance you don’t. And only, in my opinion, everyone should stay there at least one time. Love it or hate it, that is not important. What it will do is give you a frame of reference. To use another members line, touch the stove. You know it is hot. We are all telling you it is hot. But touch it anyway. You will then understand and come to your own definition of what HOT means to you.

Keep reading this board and Enjoy the ride.

The SL is THE place to stay!!!- LA is nice if the SL is booked-It is very close but has no elevator if you are on the 3rd floor-you will have to hike it!! Good aerobic workout before you "play"

I would probably never stay there again, but would always recommend that someone stay there at least one time just for the zoo experience...

Aside from our esteemed Brother Lee, the Del Rey is "training wheels" for newbies before they get smart, or is for the clueless non-CRT types who come to throw their money around and party hearty 24/7, and don't care one bit that they're getting phucked over by the chicas AND the hotel.

Agreed, but not for a whole trip (unless the whole trip is two nights). About seven years ago, I stayed there for two nights and was glad I did, but never wanted to do to again. It was fun for what it was, but as I mentioned, and now that I think about it, there was a huge pull for the chicas to leave after first nut. If you don't mind that, well, mabye it is not so bad. I like to take my time, and don't like the invisible pull of that comes from being so close to a constant flow of clients. Yes, they are working girls, but the more reminders that are constantly in your and their faces of this, the more likely it is going to be mechanical..

I was about to spend my two cents and do a fact and fiction dissertation on staying at the Del Ray. But after reading Goingsouthsoon's post decided it would just be a rerun. But then along came HikerTom and reminded me of my responsibilities as the Del Ray's greatest fan. So in spite of Goingsouthsoon's excellent post you have to listen to my two cents worth. Of course that is unless you stop reading now.

Fact or Fiction:

The Del Ray is more expensive than other popular hotels: FACT.
Why: they have an occupancy rate of about 85%. It's just a good business decision if you can get the money you're crazy not to take it.

The Del Ray's rooms are noisy and smoky: FICTION:
as Pacoloco mentioned the second floor has been sealed off from the bar and casino area. Several years ago they installed new Windows that sealed the rooms off from the outside pollution. I give you staying on the second floor does have noise issues. Third floor and up given a set of ear plugs and no bugle player outside of your room you can sleep like a baby all day. I may add earplugs is a good idea or for most any room in downtown San Jose.

It will cost you $10 to bring a girl up to your room: FACT:

I kind of look at it as a security fee. One of the things I can say about the Del Ray is that it may be the most well protected building in San Jose. Now if you're picking girls up at the Del Ray and taking them back to your hotel you're going to have taxi issues. They will cost you money maybe maybe not $10.

The rooms at the Del Ray are not the most lavishly decorated in San Jose. FACT:

no they are not but they are very functional. The beds are large the mattresses are new. The chairs function just like chairs, the tables function just like other tables, the TV works just as well as other TVs, equipped with air conditioning and ceiling fans, comes with wireless or cable Internet (free) (and works better than what I get at home) and the very well equipped and reasonably priced minibar has a lock on it. Long discussions about no locks in other hotels.

The rooms at the Del Ray are dirty and unsanitary: FICTION:

they are most definitely well Maintained. By a very courteous and responsive housekeeping staff. The head housekeeper has been there as long as I have been visiting the place and there's never been anything I ever ask of them that they did not do for me promptly. The entire room is cleaned daily. Weekly the drapes and bedspreads were washed. If you've had a particularly busy day they will be happy to make your room up twice a day. As I've gotten older I've use that service less and less. By the way there's a good supply of hot water and a hair dryer that always works.

The Del Ray has nothing to offer that you cannot get at other hotels: FICTION:

let me count the things: 24-hour room service. And I may add from a very good restaurant. If you want scrambled eggs at two in the afternoon you get them. If you want a steak at two in the morning you get it. And if you're like me and you like your coffee as soon as you get up in the morning it's only a phone call away and a 10 minute wait.

If you wake up at three in the morning and decide you'd like some good head it is just a short elevator ride down to the lobby were you will probably find a hundred plus available heads. Speaking of elevators. There was a comment made about a bullet hole in an elevator. A misleading comment in that it is a dent from a bullet that did not penetrate. So if gunfire breaks out into the elevator. Bring some entertainment alone in case it's a long wait.

That brings me to why the Del Ray will continue to be my hotel of choice. It is a magnet that draws the curious and financially stressed beautiful young women of Central America to it. On any given day at any given moment some willing hopeful never before experienced young woman will walk into the place looking for the gringo of her dreams. If I'm not there I won't be able to fulfill those dreams. Hers or mine.

Lee

Lee left out the little "welcoming committee" in his otherwise well written post - but the place, especially for the brand new, leaves much to be desired - but who cares what I think; certainly not HDR management, as 85% occupancy in this economy is nothing to sneeze at.

I just think you don't get value for your money, too many who stay there know nothing of the rest of the gulch or CR in general, but so what - if you like it, stay there, just know there are other and perhaps better options.

Speaking of the "rousted" - while I suspect they will be back, in no particular order I hate:

The "one coin" dirty little Phucker
The older - looks like an American woman - who collects $ (yeah, sure...) to help women in distress
The phony blood pressure checker - although I sometimes wish my Dr would get the perfect readings he does
The rip off cab drivers out front- especially the ones who ask "Anything you need - pot, viagra, etc - I can help you with" Try fixing your taxi meter you schmuck
The "Howdy Doody" looking tall, dirty druggy asshole who speaks perfect English, w/ a BS story - he's now offering tours - like you want to be seen with him!
The fake sun glasses, rolex, and phony Cuban cigar sellers
The tool who plays the bird call

My advice to the OP:

It's AWESOME that our CRT brothers care enough for our community to share their experience and advice. I HIGHLY recommend that you read as much as you can here and ask as many questions as you have.

But after you've absorbed it all and asked all of your questions, just remember: it's YOUR time, dick and money, no one else's. Use them how you see fit, it's your vacation.

- Stay where YOU want to stay.
- Phuck the girls YOU think are hot.
- Pay how much YOU think is a good price for pu*sy, blowjobs or bubble gum.

As many have said before me: There is no 'wrong' way to do CR.

Pura vida-
-Vince

Stay at the Morazan. Ricky Riccardo will take care of you. 1 block from HDR and KL, no chica fee (1 lady at a time though). Ricky will arrange any transportation needed (Jaco, volcanos, hotsprings) with Interbus. Rooms are about $55/night. Comfortable but not lavish, right in the center of everything though.....

Agree 100% - great location, especially if you prefer (as I do) to stay in that part of town (Vs Sportsmans area, for example) - its my 1st choice - I like the place very much!

But its not for everyone - the rooms had the same decorator as HDR   :P - and look to have been redecorated about the same time, it can be noisy, as almost all downtown SJ hotels are - the casino is smoky, so if smoke bothers you (I love it! :D  8) ) find another place. Too some have complained about "Ricky Ricardo" - not his real name - He is a little agressive in offering to do things for you (no not that; and would you really want his pick), but having been in sales for 33 years, I admire a little moxie and being agressive, as long as you don't cross into being obnoxious (I don't find that he case w/ him - and many Costa Ricans are a little clueless in the service area - but I love 'em because at heart they mean well :) - so I don't mind the guy - YMMV

I agree that everyone should do their own thing, including staying at the HDR at least once (I did). The kicker for me is that fact that the chicas will treat you like a monger if you are at the HDR. Its their place of business...you're gunna get business phucked. It will be as quick as possible so she can get back to business...her next monger. And if you want to watch the game, talk with friends, relax, good luck.
