Just wondering why everyone talks about the blue marlin and key largo at HDR but no one talks about staying there only SL and HLH. How are the rooms at hotel del ray? And chica friendly I'm assuming?

The rooms at the Del Rey are shitty. The Del Rey charges a $10 fee plus tax (so it ends up being around $12) per girl so if you typically see two or three girls during the day/night (24hrs) the girl fee can really add up over the course of a four or five day trip.

HDR rooms are average at best and overpriced compared to SL, La Amistad, and then add $11 chica fee for every one you take up. But the selection of chicas at HDR is premium and also Key largo after 11pm. So stay at SL, LA, HLH for a great room at a reasonable price

sportmens is talked about most of the time for the great rooms and food and no girl fee . but the best part of sportmens is the owner bill, the best hotel owner by far in san jose. also 10% discount for crt card holders. stay there if you can rooms go fast!!!!

Yup - Ya nailed it

Its overpriced, the rooms were last decorated when LBJ was President, and - this from a cigar smoker - unless you have a room high up, its noisy and can be smoky - I stayed there once, and that was enough.

In fairness, there are guys who like the place and recommend it, for what reason I can't fathom - better choices, beter options.

Didn't they close off the ceiling above the casino so the smoke and noise no longer rise to the upper floors?

HDR is a good choice for a Rookie to wade into the deep end a few times, a Baptism by Fire so to speak, then its time to move on to the Hotels in Amon.

Just don't bring a black light with you, you'll see spooge covering every surface of the room!

Continuing with your theme, you don't need to put your hand on a hot stove to know:

Its hot
It burns
It hurts

By all means go there; just don't stay there - if more avoided the place, maybe they just might redecorate, and offer some value for the $$ charged - but even for the total rookie, the Sportsmans, and any number of other places are - IMO - much better choices - for what you get, its waaaay overpriced, and for the total rookie, its like blood in the water for sharks, if you know what I mean :)

Final thought - you will never know the gulch if you just stay in the DelRey - for too many, thats all they know, and there are lots better options.

I stayed at HDR... only once... during my first trip for two nights. Back then, the room was only $60 per night. I have no regrets, but was definitely not impressed with the accommodations. If I were going to make my first trip today, the price of the rooms would be enough to discourage me from booking there. There are many more options available for the newbie monger that weren't there when I first started in the gulch.

Some feel it encourages shorter sessions; from watching the chicas ride the elevators, that seems to be the case.
