"Mass food poisoning suffered by members of the Legislative Assembly three weeks ago was the start of complaints that led to the closing on Wednesday of the Café Mundo restaurant in the barrio Otoya section of San Jose. Officials of the ministry of health closed the restaurant indefinitely after an inspection confirmed that the premises failed to meet sanitary conditions. At least 20 legislative employees and officials of the Judicial Investigative Police were reported as becoming ill after eating at Cafe Mundo."

This is the norm for Costa Rica. Ticos are not necessarily stupid but are stubborn and hard headed .

They wont listen pass the basics of how to do anything.

I've seen them cutting avocado and raw chicken on the same cutting board at the same time.

I eat most of my meals at home.

Disappointing! I assume they are making enough money to be able to comply with the sanitary regulations.

"sanitary regulations" This is why I often eat at USA franchises, KFC, Mcdonalds,or Quiznos, if I eat away from home. They train their employees better and monitor them better. There are a few Sodas where the owner cooks as is if they were cooking for their family as well but the average restaurant is taking a chance.

I've noticed this too. I especially like the Quiznos on Central Avenida. Seems to be clean and well run. I think it's actually as good [maybe better] than the Quiznos in the states; staffed with bright young people who always seem eager to use their English skills to help me order. :)

US Franchises or the soda next door, I don't care in the end what matters is who is running the place and if they go by the book. I got sick by eating a Big Mac in Sydney a couple of years back and I've sworn never to step into another McDonalds as long as I live. On the other hand I've eaten at roaside dumps in Europe, US, Central America and Costa Rica with out a problem. Generalizing that tico run places are the pits is plain ignorant.

Thanks for enlightening us on our ignorance.

I've personally witnessed several very disturbing food handling practices here including a 'cook' cutting raw chicken and fresh avocado on the same cutting board.

Cafe Mundo is the 3rd big tico restaurant to be closed for mass illness since I've lived here. One was using sewer water to wash vegetables. And another was using bleach to wash old raw chicken meat to kill the smell. I doubt those things occur at KFC.

But using your wisdom, since you got sick once in Sydney, we should all "never step into another McDonalds as long as we live". Sure, that's not ignorant.

If you do not have the stomach to live and eat in the third world, maybe you should move back to the US where everything is spic and span.

I wonder if conditions in the city are worse than tourist areas, such as beaches, volcanoes and rainforest. Don't seem to hear as many food problems outside of the city. Have lived here 11 years and thank God I have been lucky so far. I have walked out of a few restaurants because I just didn't feel good about it. But I do eat in sodas, small restaurants and all kind of Tico roadstands selling food and have found most of them to have pretty good health standards. I would have never suspected this with Cafe Mundo. Have been eating there practically since I moved here, but haven't been in a few years. La Princesa Marina was not a surprise. The one time I ate there, something just struck me funny about the place.

Strange, when I moved here I could eat just about anything and never got sick. Now, after four years of rice and beans, I can no longer eat the fat-filled greasy food they serve in Taco Bell, McDonalds, etc. not to mention my favorite Doritos. Thinking clean and properly prepared food is more dangerous in the States (thanks to all the fat, salt etc.) when you eat it all the time than the small risk associated with eating improperly prepared foods that are actually pretty healthy for you.

After losing 60lbs here, I can't eat that clean, well-prepared but fat/grease filled mess that American's call food without my stomach throwing a worse revolt than any mild food poisoning.
