No kidding. Talk about nervous nellies. Any risk in CR is mild and minor compared to most world cities. The only time I have not walked at all hours anywhere in SJO is when I had a chica with me. Otherwise it is good exercise and we all need that.

well i guess you've never been bitten or chased by a rabid tranny security guard. that trek is dangerous and best made at top speed. if you don't want to run a strong strident power walk is another approach.

Always paranoia and fear over the trannies. Do you know you can do whatever bodily harm or use excessive force on the she/ he's and no authority in CR will ever do anything.!

Interesting. I'll be staying at La Amistad but will be spending a lot of my time at the SL. And I plan on being there at closing time sometimes. So I guess I will risk the walk, I can run pretty fast for my age, my cardio routine puts most gym rats to shame.

some of those trees out front at SL are pretty dry and prickly. i've broken off a few branches and wielded them intimidatingly at them. you can leave those types of weapons in between the amistad and the hotel right next store so bills trees don't get too messed up. probably some of mine still there if you look.

so you've got weapons stashed for yourself while you're sprinting top speed back to the LA???

A couple of weeks ago, I walked (solo) from the DI to the DR at about 11:00 PM, without incident. The next night, having a chica with me, I took a taxi from the DI to the Hotel Morazan at about 11:00 PM, and sure enough, at the top of the hill, on the corner, were several trannies. I think I'll take a taxi in the future, at that hour.

no of course not. it was a ridiculous late april fools ruse that people seemed to get angry about so i continued.
i only clear it up because i don't want a newbie actually falling mid sprint.
i have walked late from SL to LA many times in various states of mind, alone and with someone never encountering one single problem that made me nervous.
well ok the gay guy that washes cars at SL or formerly washed them idk would blow kisses and cat call. lets just say he's not the most attractive guy that wanted my C*ck up their ass. that was a little annoying after a few years.
thought i posted long enough on this board that people might guess i was pulling their legs.
yes blind, drunk, blind drunk and humorless men can indeed safely navigate this stretch of urban terror.

Before I went to SJ for time first time all I heard was how dangerous it was to be around that few block area known as Gringo Gulch at night. While I'm sure it's a good idea to get a taxi at night for a few bucks, I can tell many haven't been to places like Ermita in Manila, etc. It's a thousand times more dangerous. Urchins and thugs alike over the place waiting to rob you or much worse. And that's right outside the bars and popular hotels. San Jose is Sleepyville compared to most of Manila, which I think is a complete sh$&hole for the most part. I was mugged and robbed and walking down the street saw one guy go after another with a machete. I wont be returning . LOL.

Yes, but its not like he could "see" any of the dangers he might have faced! :)
(Speaking of him, I hope he gets his computer issues resolved; I miss his posts :) )

I tend to agree with you; on this board there is a strong sentiment that you need to take cabs EVERYWHERE, especially at night - well, maybe, but I've made the walk 100's of times from the HDR to the Presidente, as well as the Morazon, and if you ignore the "hey, one coin" assholes, its really not too bad.

Like most things, the truth lies somewhere in between.

But if you consider the times guys have had trouble, the story almost always starts with:

"It was late at night, I was alone, I was really drunk....."

Some seem to have a "Phuck with me please" sign (in spanish  ) taped to their back, and get into trouble because of the poor choices THEY made.

I think some guys read too much into the cabs. When I was living there I walked everywhere, at every hour. I walked from the DR to my apartment near the Pantera Rosa around 130am. Alone. Numerous times all around town, and never once had an issue.

Coming from a cold climate, to the warm temps of CR, that hill between Dunn inn and SL just about killed me

Wanna make money in CR? Freeze that hill and charge the locals to go sledding

I walked around quite a bit in the evening and early night the three times I've been there and never had any problems.

No offense but 3 times is a small sample size--we've had many-trip Brothers, even perpetual tourists that have suffered assault and other violence for having violated the conventional wisdom--do yourself a favor: spend the short money and take a cab at night.

This is just another yada yada yada post... YMMV

I have only four trips experience to pull from. Stayed at SL, Castillo and Dona Ines. I walked alone, where and when I wanted to at all hours. Even went walking several times late at night just to sleep better. Never had an incident ... oh wait... there was that one time when that little guy came charging at me from across the street and waving a machete. It was on one of the side streets just before I reached Avenida Central walking from the SL at about midnight. I couldn't tell what he was screaming at me, so I just kept walking. He looked at me like I was the crazy one. Sure would like to know what he wanted. (Note to self: learn more Spanish) Other than that, never had an incident. Of course I'm 6'2"/260lb and I've worked in prisons for the last 15 years, so my idea of danger might be a little jaded.... so like I said.. YMMV.
