Are there any good, or even decent places to get donuts in or around San Jose? I'm planning an extended trip for next year, and I like to grab donuts once a week or so.

This is one odd thing about Costa Rica and food.

Ticos will fry anyhting and absolutely ANYTHING but I have never found a good donut in over 5 years in CR! Only baked cake like donuts!

Go to almost any soda and order a casado con cerdo and they will likely take your pork chop and drop it in a deep fryer but a real honest to goodness donut, they will freaking bake it.

I would prefer the baked pork chop and the fried donut but no such luck in Costa Rica.

As a replacement try any panaderia and they will most likely have some good pastries but not donuts.

Musmanni, a bakery chain, has donut-like pastries. I have never seen a donut in CR.

There are donut kiosks in almost every mall in CR I forget the name of the chain. They also have kiosks in some strip shopping centers and AM/PM has donuts in their bakery section. Almost all I have seen are baked and filled with some sort of filling. Plain fried donuts ala Dunkin Donuts are rare.

I've seen donuts that looked good on Avenida 5, on the other side of the street from Papi's and down (west) the block from Hotel Morazon...right on the street.

I've had the bready donuts and they are good with coffee. There's a shop in Heredia on the road from the train station to the Plaza and Catedral, it is only a block or two from the train station and on the same street as the Fiesta Casino. The second one is on the 2nd block west of the Del Ray, and looks like Krispy Kreme donuts. They make mini donuts as well, and have a counter street-side, so one can pick a few up to juice up their daily run.

Try "Spoons"

Located on Ave Central (as well as a few other locations), a few blocks from the Presidente walking towards the Mercado (it will be on the right side of the street), they have them - However....

For a place that LOVES fried stuff, and has a number of American chains, I'm amazed Dunkin' Donuts has not made it to CR.

Spoons is OK but Dunkin Dounuts its not!

'Nica' park & 'Pigeon' park. Real names or just descriptions of what flocks there? :D :D :D

Now I want a donut, but I just got back from the gym. I don't want a long workout to be a waste, so I'll have an apple instead :|

Mmmm... I love donuts but they don't love me, too any calories and not enough redeeming qualities health-wise. So I don't eat donuts often but when I do, ohhhhhh........

My first trip to Costa Rica was in the year of 1996 to go fishing. Went every year from 1996 through 2001. I feel it was A lot safer and cleaner at that time.
I never ran across any of the things that Greengo is talking about but I may not have been drinking or smoking the same shit he was.
