Here's my plan for cigars after I move to CR.

I have to return to the USA (or just leave CR) every 90 days, so I return to USA and buy up a few boxes of my favorite Dominicans, Nicaraugans, Hondurans and other cigars here in the states and just take them back with me.

Buy Cubans once in a while in CR and smoke them when I feel in the mood for a Cuban.

Try to find cigars made in CR that I can learn to enjoy.

Rinse and repeat.

Thanks, Smelvis - you know your stuff too! And your collection sounds great.

Hope to enjoy one with you in San Jose someday soon - I was in SJ in Jan, and HDR has changed its policy banning cigars;you can smoke 'em if you got 'em - while I don't like that place for many reasons, I applaude the decision; its great to "win one" for a change!

PS Since you mentioned you have Cuban Cigars in your collection, and due to the embargo its illegal, I must insist you send them to me for disposal - I will set them on fire, one cigar at a time, of course! :)

K Pax - sounds like a plan - there are Costa Rican cigars you might like - try Don Ursulo (I think I'm misspelling the name - but also think he is a CRT sponsor) - has gotten many good reviews - other than that I don't know much about his cigars; as I previously posted I bring my own.

I'd be interested in hearing more about his cigars, and next trip (been saying that the last 5 "next trips"!) will go to his location, which I'm told is close to Escazu.

Anyone who has smoked them - would be glad to hear your impressions - also, construction, price points, strength, etc.

Holy shit, HDR no longer bans cigars? Then I may go back more often to patrol the bar. I don't smoke them when I'm looking for chicas, but if I'm just hanging out, then I smoke a lot. And I just hated the fact they let the ciggie smokers fill up the place but banned cigars!!!!

In mid Jan the "no cigars" signs were down @ the DelRey, and I personally smoked a few there - now we have the issue at Sportsmens where they want you to sit near the window in the back bar if you are going to smoke cigars :( - was not the case my last trip there in OCT of 2010, but was the case in Jan.

I can live w/ it, and on some level am grateful to Bill for allowing us to smoke there, but part of the charm of CR is kicking back and not putting up with some of the BS here in the USA - and yeah, I realize not everyone loves cigars like some of us do, but I don't want to see CR turned into another Miami.

Re the DelRey - all they had to do was put in a cigar friendly section - put in a smoke sucker, and all could have been accomodated - they make enough $$ that the expense would not have broken them - but let me applaude them for the policy change and thank them for it.

Hey Scuba
PM or email me your address and I'll send a little care package bro! I am very sorry about the SL though. I spent a shit load of time smoking cigars on the couches with my wingman and the ladies. I hate to say it but cigars are a major part of my trip and enjoyment I may for the 1st time have to stay elsewhere and that makes me very sad. I know it sounds like I am making a big deal out of it but you need to understand I Loved sitting on the couches smoking cigars. Every night my wingman and I would entertain in the penthouse then head down for a chicken burrito and finish with the 6th or 7th cigar of the day on the couches! Darn it.

Why are people complaining. I don't mean to sound rude but cigarettes smell pretty bad to me and I have never complained about them. Sorry Bill I Love ya Bro but it's a deal breaker for me. I guess I get to meet Boyd for a lengthy visit now for sure.

I understand completely - and agree with you 100% - I love the couches there too! Not the same sitting in the back - what can I say; great minds think alike!

Probably someone complained and instead of saying get over it, was easier to put us by an open window way in the back - but as I posted, preferable to an outright ban!

I HATE the smell of cigarette smoke too, yet b/c I'm a cigar smoker, would never complain - but for whatever reason(s) they seem to be OK and cigars (which are a natural product, with no chemicals or additives, and if aged properly, don't smell bad) get a bad rap - I stopped eating at the res't across from the Presidente because they ban cigars from their open air dining area, but, yup, allow cigarettes.

I'm a very moderate drinker, and don't like drunks - yet I'm also a live and let live guy; I can't count the number of loud drunks I've encountered in CR, and unless they personally hassle me (which has not happened) - live and let live.

PM sent.

Yes and I have noticed that their cigars are typically too moist as well. I won't buy there anymore because half the time I couldn't smoke them without dry-boxing them for a while.

You know, you're right - I have noticed it too - but this new management team (Java and Boyd) seem pretty sharp and I'm sure they will get the humidity issue corrected. Hint - think 68F and 70 - 72% Humidity - others can quibble but this is how I store my own and prefer to err on the dry side vs moist - or just make it 69/69 easy to remember!

(And I'm sorry if I sound like a broken record - but you buy a Cuban for $20, and find out its not smokeable b/c of poor storage - sorry, but thats BS - and how they are kept is a major issue - you can easily FU great cigars by improper storage)

Well I am very pleased to hear that the HLH is keeping their cigar walk-in humidor humidity controlled. I am looking forward to paying them a visit to sample their selection.

I understand keeping the chicas happy to, But my last time at the SL my hotel charges alone were almost $3000 how much do they spend there?

Not being an ass just my opinion. I actually like the stools by the window and spend a lot of time there but the couches are way more comfortable. Cigarettes really stink to me just doesn't seem right to me, of course life never was suppose to be fair LOL

I hear ya, I wouldn't have any complaints if cigarettes were treated the same. I won't not go there I love the place and Bill and his staff have treated me very well. I just won't stay there is all. I will stay at HLH probably or maybe the beach!

I am unique and admit it cigars are a bigger part of my Vacations than most and I try and take that into account when I post. Nothing will ever be a perfect fit for everyone. At least cigars are natural unlike cigarettes which are filled with hundreds of chemicals many of which are designed to kill. I do try to be polite when smoking as someone said I won't lite up next to someone without asking if they mind, but if someone sits next or close to me when I am already smoking it's on them.

Much of this could be fixed with a good ventilation system though I understand this may be cost prohibitive. I do think many mongers are cigar aficionados, I have no clue the numbers I guess they seem like a lot because most of my friends smoke them. In truth we are probably a small percentage compared to cigarette smokers. that's why I liked the couches because the bar is always filled with cigarette smoke.

Anyway I don't expect any place to change for me I will just choose where I go by what fits with my likes and dis likes. I guess I was just disappointed because I considered the SL my home away from home  Also this is the first time I even considered looking elsewhere to stay as a first choice.

I also won't let anything bother me when I am there having fun after all I'm there for fun and not to be pissed off. It's not my house which you may smoke cigars in but if you want a cigarette my front porch is available for you! 8)

Hey Bill if I bought an easy chair for my old ass would you mind putting it by the windows overlooking the alley LOL J/K brother!

Carry on and you all have fun out there, and remember no farting!
