Next week I'll be in S.J., I'm planning on going to Castros as I like to Salsa and Bachata, I'm pretty good at it. I'm not looking for a hook-up, but if fate takes me there I'm ok with it. There was prev. thread about P4P burnout and the poster mention Castros as a place to meet non-working chicas, a family type club. :D
What can I expect as an older gringo? what is the Tico etiquette at the club?
Suggestions and any info welcomed.

I've been there a handful of times. It's a good place for dancing. There are lots of couples there but also lots of groups with extra women and some single ones as well. They love to dance and I suspect any woman without a partner would be inclined to accept a dance invitation. If not, there are so many others that you just move on.

In the event I get turned down, I try to avoid asking somebody else within view, as they may not like being second choice, but I wouldn't worry about it really. Friday and Saturday are pretty busy, Thursday is good. And if you are a drinker buy yourself a bottle of rum (unless you're a beer drinker) and a bottle of mixer and you can avoid trying to get the waiter's attention when you need a refill. I like the place.

I really love the karaoke bar upstairs too. Have taken girls I really click with there and we had lots of fun.

A great place for karaoke, everybody including the tico couples are friendly if you are a gentleman and not a loudmouth gringo pr*ck. I have taken chicas there too, they love a chance to sing and it pays off in the bedroom.

my trip there (with a date) was a very good time as my date loved to dance and the service was good and not to pushy ...the time I went to the bano on the way I ran into a few single girls who were friendly and later when my date went to the bano came up to me at my table asking for a dance ....as a rule this is were I screw up a great night out but this times I just said no thanks .....but my girl returned to see the girl walk away ,,,,and I made good points with her not being a knucklehead ....but my take is ...take a date and you will have a great time ....

let me add a different spin...

agree with all of the good reviews and recommend it as a place to go, even late on Sunday Nights....

I live here in CR. I am in my early 50's. I have "silver" hair and since most all Tico's from 50-80 yr still have jet-black hair I definitly stand out in Tico crowds 8)

Each time I have taken a cita there, even in the wee hours of the night when the crowd is less, I have never had a problem. I have noticed that earlier in the evenings, say 7-9:30pm you will see a lot more mixed-group, mixed-gringo, and mixed-ages. BUT, I have NEVER had any concerns there, even with those little 18 yr olds :? 8)

Check it out, you will like the place and all of the mirrors. They mix their genres well for all to cut-the-rug with.

Also agree that if the place doesn't have the sufficient energy levels that you enjoy and expect then move on. There are a LOT of great places to go dancing (or karaoke) in CR.

Side Note: IMHO gringos who want to learn to dance the Latin stuff should start by learning merengue....JMHO

Pura Vida
