I still don't know where that is. Is it near the music store on the corner across the street (and down) from the Colonial, and across from the mini-mart that opened a couple years ago? I didn't know there was a bar there.

It's on the street one block behind the NYB....the street that has the bridge we walk under in front of Parque Espana. The bar is located on the left, just about 50 yards before the bridge. I've been in the place a few times, it's a tico bar.

Observations/opinion:

Actually I was in there about 10:30 p.m. till 11 p.m. one evening on my January trip. Visited it and several other places within four or five blocks of the Del Ray. Not my normal behavior but was curious what was out there. Confirmed a growing suspicion I have that what I once considered a hard-edged vacation destination was growing soft. Almost without exception the crowd in the places looked like date night in the United States.

San Jose has had its dark side for the 20 years that I've been travelling to Costa Rica. I remember when the owner of the Taipai (Taipan) Club was machine gunned on Paseo Colon. If you like to persue that dark, underbelly of life, take an occasional walk on the wild side, dwell in the latrines you will see it all in San Jose. But I think it makes life interesting. If you cant handle it go to Disneyworld.

I know as every era comes to an end another begins … and although I have only 7 years of experience in SJ under my belt …. I will quote Vince Lombardi and say: “WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AROUND HERE …”

Can’t imagine the series of happenings within at least the last calendar year or so makes San Jose as appealing of a “vacation” destination as it used to be. I am not one who is consistently up on the goings ons, but surely the climate seems to be changing and it doesn’t sound necessarily for the better

Now surely, I am not oblivious to the obvious…

It is still a Field of Dreams out there for many ... “If they Shake it … men will C*m” no pun intended.

Other then the above, we do all make the pilgrimage to SJ for different reasons… some solely for the flesh while other try to incorporate an all-inclusive experience where being free to roam safely matters, accommodations matter, activities matter, reasonable to good pricing matters, good eating matters and fellowship matters … to be able to have all of one of those things in abundance or a balance of them all is what has personally kept me coming back.

But I am starting to sense things changing in my gut … and hopefully its just a mirage or me overdoing it on 25 cent wing night.

Here is what I can, just off the top of my head, remember reading in the last year or so in no particular order

• New woman President with an eventual agenda of “cleaning-up” San Jose
• Raid at Del Rey by policia
• Raid at HLH by policia where they do significant physical damage to the place
• Raid/Robbery at HLH by off duty policia (or criminals disguised as policia) leaving at least the front desk lady with a busted nose or something
• Ousting of popular liason (BKtuna) from Dunn Inn initiating over unfounded drug allegations after he completed the physical and image re-birth of the Dunn … and then the establishment goes out to stick it to the patrons by massive double bookings , unfavorable conversion rates, etc
• Raids and/or periodic temporary closings of NF
• Owner of NF shot gangland style (10 times?) Wow!!!

And when you add these to the always prevalent … gringo pricing, drink hustles, waiters/waitresses padding bills, taxi drivers trying to screw you, hotel over charges, chica fees, exchange rate, escalating MP pricing and it seems more and more there is some vagrant following you down the street for a hand out or to sell you something.

(Yes , some of these final items are part and parcel for any international American traveler anywhere you go, but these things are becoming more and more common place almost to where the mind set is to expect it.)

THIS IS NOT YOUR DADDY’S COSTA RICA ANYMORE!!!! LOL

…and not that I ever expected things to never change … change is the way of things, but Damn … it’s starting to sound like one should take the chances with the Cartel Battles roaming Tijuana … LOL.

Before anyone gets their granny panties extra frilly … I will say this list is not all-inclusive but just things from my recollection… it is not to taint the good experience one can still have coming to San Jose (I’ll be there soon) but some may dispute the incidents above and others may know that there are a million and one things that were left out.

For me the questions still remain … ”WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AROUND HERE…? “

Is there reason for more than casual concern?

Are these all isolated, unrelated happenings?

Are we going into a new era of P4P in San Jose where we have to be more cognizant of raids and shootings, security, safety?

Or is all this “status quo” and just a product of more prevalent media type outlets and forums like CRT, that didn’t exist as strongly as before and finding out about such happenings are merely a mouse click or 2 away ... or simply on your hip in your I-phone or Blackberry?

So quit whining and go somewhere else. you won't be missed. This is a man's website.

Female. 6.5 months old.

My previous cat of 15 years who arrived in Costa Rica in a First Class seat on Delta 4.5 years ago died last year and I was so tore up by it that I swore I'd never get another one.

But I was at a hardware store in Rohrmoser last August and a tiny little cat darted out from under the shelf. She was friendly so I took her to the vet and now she lives in a luxury condo.

I have not named her. I just call her, "Girl" or "kitty kitty", or "CAT !" when she breaks stuff.

So, what's new? Yes, bad news is readily available but I don't see anything worse than a few years ago.

Venues change. Don't you think we could dig up the same post from several years ago: "What will we do without the Park Hotel?" "Where will we stay if not at the Presidente?" "Stay away from Morizon park

Yes, there are a few less girls and fewer gringos with overflowing pockets. There seem to be fewer guys coming to see how many holes they can fill in 48 hours and more guys who are meeting favoritas and wifing-up for few days. More house parties and fewer bar crawls.

Still, the place is whatever you want it to be. The more things change the more they stay the same. I see new girls wandering in every day and the pricing is as flexible as you want it to be (as high or low as you are willing to pay). Girls seem to more readily TLN if the party is fun, less likely to think they are missing a payday at the Del Rey. It's a buyers market and I assure you that there are venues that are yet to be discovered. Pura Vida.

Hmmm ... If you know anything about the purpose of a forum ... you pose questions, you get answers, you seek opinions, gather information etc.
It was a posed question(s) to generate opinions of that question / topic ... as you can see by the many who have "constructively" replied.

There wasn't anything or very little of a personal nature about this at all ... I didn't say San Jose was a bad place, I didn't say I was afraid of coming to San Jose ... just raised a question (which is a big purpose of forums)

Yet your reply was all of a personal nature and you don't even know me ... that's pretty damn sad.

And if this website is the barometer for you to be a man ... then why respond like a girl? I would never want to talk bad or imply negatively on your precious little Costa Rica. Heaven Forbid.

Respond if you like, but this is the last you will directly here from me ... As the USA does not negotiate with terrorist ... I don't go toe to toe with idiots

IS SAN JOSE BECOMING LESS APPEALING? Are you f···ing kidding me? Was in the Del Rey yesterday evening around sunset for a couple of hours and was shocked. That time of day on a Wednesday and there were hot chicks everywhere. And I don´t throw around the word hot. I´m not into the heifers that get praised by the majority. Talked with at least 8 to 10 stunners.

This is true. I was there from 9:30pm and later and it was great. Wed through Sat nights are the best. Sunday is usually bad as Sunday is a big family/rest day for most Latinos.

I will repeat an observation that I have made several times over the years. I find it is more about the lifecycle of us as mongers as it relates to CR than many actual changes here. There are still lots of girls, casinos, bars and party to be had. The new guys are just as blown away as we were.
