Can be done for 20K Continental miles (somewhat in advance), or $400-500 normally, I am sure you could find specials on Copa. Bit over 3 hrs each way with layover..

Ride around the mountain to the airport from MDE to CB properties is about 35-40 minutes with their drivers I have playfully named Helio Castroveves (Hector) and Mario Andretti (Fernando)...  70K.. About $37-38 right now each way.. Hold on for a fun ride..

Stay at CB1 or 2, really does not matter, meet Boyd, ask him to show you the ropes.. Good guy.. Chicas there are 150K short time to 200K TLN.. $77-105 (approx.) varies by exchange rate. Boyd is also famous for Casa tours (SJ MP equivalent) prices range from 30K ($16 per 1/2 hour) to 200K ($105 for 1 hour) and everywhere in between. Although Boyd prefers the cheaper ones.. :D :D

As far as one who just did it, is it worth it, I would say that would be a definite YES !!!

Don't forget to get the Yellow Fever vaccination 10 days prior to your return to CR, you will be asked for it at MDE airport prior to boarding your return flight to SJO....

El S,

That seems like a very cheap price in frequent flyer miles. In your example each frequent flyer mile would be worth $0.02 to $0.025. I assume this is on Copa using Continental miles. The distance isn't large, but it is an international flight. Paying only 20k miles round trip San Jose - Medellin looks like a great deal to me! Too bad I can't travel these days

Just checked it out again, because I agree this is very unusual... Check it out, go out 2-3 mos http://www.continental.com click reward travel before the search, I put in random dates, 5/18-20 came up economy 10K each way. 1 stop thru PTY per normal (short layover)

Price on the same flight.. $540   (have to go to http://www.copaair.com for that) For some reason you can book a miles ticket on Continentals site from the USA, but can't buy it except on Copas site.. kinda strange..

Thanks for confirming this. For those with 20k miles saved up at Continental and the ability to plan ahead, the frequent flyer Copa flight is a great deal!

Silencioso, do you happen to know if the Yellow Fever shot can be taken in Costa Rica or in Colombia?

Thanks for your input.

Both, checked with the CB staff this trip to ask about it, I have several friends who have traveled back and forth, several who live in Costa Rica.

Just need it 10 days before you land back in CR coming from Colombia.. Shot is good for 10 years

No matter what, I'd try to stay more than one night in MDE !

I've done the COPA connection several times from SJO to MDE via PTY. The short flight is pretty painless, but expensive ($350 - $550). I would at least spend a few days in MDE to make my travel investment worthwhile.

TACA is also 20K miles SJO-MDE. And it's a nonstop flight, under 2 hrs. But one day in Colo is really a waste. You'll get there mid-afternoon and will have to go back to the airport the next morning. I'd suggest at least 2 nights in Medellin.

Get the shot in the US before you even leave, like El Silencioso said, you need to have it at least 10 days before returning to CR. And make sure you get it at a place that will give you a yellow vaccination card. The shot means nothing without this internationally recognized booklet. There are travel vaccination clinics and travel doctors everywhere.

My recommendation would be to get the shot at a public clinic when in Colombia. The cost for the vaccination is COP$ 40,000 ($20 US) vs the $197 US I paid at an international medicine clinic here in NJ. If the 10-day wait period doesn't fit into your itinerary, than get the shot at a public health center in the US. I believe it will be much cheaper than what I paid at a hospital clinic.

Yep, the shot is required when returning to CR from Colombia. You may be one of the lucky ones who makes it through without being noticed... but then again, maybe not.
