So much great info on this site but I don't think I've ever seen any recommendations for good barber shops. Are there any places in the Gulch area that provide a good service? Cost?

Be very careful and get a recommendation from someone you've seen the finished product. Most 'barbers' here are butchers.

Ever since Roy the longtime barber at the Dunn's Inn died I have not heard of a replacement near the gulch. If you do not mind a little travel there is a good shop in Escazu. Take the Escazu bus from Coca Cola and after the bus leaves the auto pista keep on eye out for the big Scotia bank building on the right. Get off at the next stop and the shop is in the little strip mall behind Scotia bank. I use a guy named Andreas cost 3000 colones.

I was wondering what happened to your hair. :P

There a salon in the Holiday Inn or 2 kitty-corner from there, Salon Jenni is good for half the price.

FLORIDA loved this place he would go in for a mani & pedi while I sat across the street at the Chineese Rest drinking an Imperial waiting for him. There use to be a couple of LOOKERS that worked there as well..

 Yeah true dat. It aint what it used to be.

But I used to use a Flowbee for years. That thing worked great.

In a recent study, 20% of Billionaires cut their own hair.

Best thing to do if you live here or have to get a cut here is to go to the clippers. If you don't wanna go too buzzed, tell them to use a number 4 or 5 guard. Can't mess up this cut. :D

Vintage Greengo post, great metaphors. Loved the Don Knott's reference. :D

There's a sala de belleza about 1/2 block from the Dunn Inn. For a better one (reportedly) here's a Thread mentioning Peloquirea Maritza: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29174&p=315021&hilit=maritza#p315021
Matter of fact I plan to visit these Nica sisters next week--doesn't hurt that Relax and Idem are close by and La Esquinas de Buenas Aires and La Mansion is just down the street, in opposite directions. BTW all these are listed in our magnificent Monger Map.

Then finally you can blend in, but still don't wear shorts.
Also if you want to look like an eco-tourist wear Birkenstalks with white socks, and look very earnest, with binoculars in order to see a Queztal. Hey Boyd, I have a new costume for you for Halloween, a bird observer eco-tourist with binoculars. Just give me credit if you use the idea, and buy me a beer. Still can't beat the trannie outfit though.

So far, one simple question = 8 silly comments + 3 helpful tips for a brother in doubt;
above par for the posts lately.

Great question and you really need to be careful here and not get butchered - agree 100%

JazzBro - you ever had your hair cut by either of those 2 Nica sister's at Maritza's ? Personally, IMHO, I would NOT recommend for a cut there, other things, sure.....

The Mall San Pedro is also a joke...just look at Pac55 anytime he leaves one of those places....

Here is my 2 cents based on recent searches. BTW, I have not cut my hair in nearly 6 months......

anyway, it was Dec 31, 2010 and I was cruising downtown when I spotted 2 interesting things near Parque Merced. 1) A hot Hotel M chica with her young Tico son and 2) she was standing in a line with approx. 20-30 other Tico's. Why? They were all waiting to get haircuts prior to all of the New Year's Eve parties here. The salon had approx. 12-15 barbers all working. I told myself I would come back.

Skip to this last Monday. I went back. It was 11:30 am and they had 7 barbers working and 2 people waiting. Good sign. I was passed through w/i min's (2 ?) and walked out of there one happy-ass camper. Cost: 2,000 colones and in all my hair experiences I could tell within the first 15 seconds on how she handled my hair, how and where she started, etc that she was a pro.

I will get the exact directions but please feel free to PM me at anytime. Looking at the CRT Map I place it very near to Avenida 4 and Calle 8 (?)
* I will ask for a tarjeta next time I am near there

Pura Vida

EdB (now clean-cut again and ready for MDE) :D

My barber is the best for me. He is fast and cheap. 1000 colones. you should tip at least 1000. I have been going there for 5 years
He is located on Calle 2. Which is the street at the west end of Parque Central. From the park head south on Calle 2. to Ave 8. Ave 8 is the new street they just paved with real cement. Cross Ave 8. The shop is the second store from the corner on the Right going south. My barber is in the back on the right. The guy in the back, on the left,is great too. The owner is up front and collects the cash. These guys are not going to screw you. Ignore the mess. This is Costa Rica. If you like chess. They do too.
I can't believe how bad this board has gotten. I guess that is why I haven't posted much in the last few years.
