Since I've switched to exclusively taking the bus to/from the airport. It's a directo, which means there are no stops until I arrive at the airport. With the construction on the General Cañas aka platina o Rio Virila bridge, the buses also get a free pass to the front of the line. With waits of 15 to 45 minutes to get past the bottleneck, the bus is not only cheaper, but quicker.

I came & went from/to the airport in the past couple of weeks & the traffic grinds down to bumper to bumper. It took approx. an extra 15 mins. each way coming & going @ 1pm & 11am. The cabbie on the way back told me it was a 200kc fine to take the bus lane at the far right so we waited!

Yep motorcycle cops were chasing non- bus traffic from the lane on the way in but my interbus van followed a cop and never moved over so I guess a tourist van/taxi is considered a bus? Breezed right through coming in but traffic headed towards the airport was backed up several km.

Buses to Alajuela and the airport leave from the TUASSA terminal on Ave 2, across (or almost across) from Parque Merced. Make sure to get on a bus that has an "Aeropuerto" sign on it. FYI a single daily bus to Poas NP also leaves from this terminal, you have to spend about three hours at the park but it's a cheap way to get there.
