I thought you could use Skype on the I-pod Touch. It is supposed to have the capabilities for Skype communication if you have access to WiFi.

You can, you just need the headphone set with a microphone.

Once again Verizon is acting like a BIG shot bully. Skype will in fact work on the Droid phones (I have a Droidx) in the US but just on the Verizon network. It won't work on WiFi or in CR. Bless Verizon's sweet little heart for making Skype agree to such a deal. ALSO , Sprint, like Verizon uses CDMA technology which is not available in CR. In CR only GSM is relevant. TDMA exisits, but no lines are available.

The SIM cards at the airport and thru ICE are only GSM technology, so you need a "Quad Mode Unlocked GSM phone" that will work in the USA on T-Mobile. If it works on T-Mobile, it will likely work in CR. I purchased a used (see Craiglist) unlocked 3gs 8gb iphone for $200 and it works fine in CR. The SIM card from ICE includes data and they will set it up for you before you leave the airport. SKype on the iphone will work on WiFi in CR so that you can use it just like you do in the US.

You can also use the iphone in the US if you activate it on T-Mobile's prepaid plan and then you will have an extra phone to call and text with putas in the US.  Just saying. :D

Lennydo is correct about how Skype works on Verizon Droid phones. Although you can connect to WIFI with your verizon droid phone and access the internet while in Costa Rica you will not be able to use Skype or Verizon to make phone calls. But you could communicate through email. However I don't think you need a "Quad Mode" Unlocked GSM Phone. A single band unlocked GSM phone will suit you fine as long as that band is 1800.

Another reason to just get a cheap unlocked GSM phone (mine was $20 new in Thailand), is that it would be no big deal if it gets lost or stolen. How many threads advise members not to wear expensive jewelry and to take only the cash they will need while in the gulch? Instead of walking around with a phone worth hundreds of dollars, lock it up in your room safe and use a cheap one.

I bought a phone from Verizon that had a sim card. I would just let calls from the US go to voice mail then check voice mail for no charge plus I had the number that called then used my Magic Jack to call back to the US

I'm sure more than a few gringos have had their Iphone or smartphone jacked in the street. I'm sure a lesson was learned.

Since the question was about Skype rates, I can only offer this:

I use Skype sometimes on my computer. The rate is $.02/minute no matter who I call outside of a Skype ID. Anywhere.
