#1.: Do NOT have your ignorant self FIRST sent to the private hospitals. Get sent to a Caja hospital and get STABALIZED...as in necessary blood transfusion.....and don't be looking for no blood pump....they rely on gravity, for the most part....

#2.: After being stabalized in the PUBLIC HOSPITAL, THEN consider transfer to the private, fancy places.

"Why is this, Steven1, you duffus, you?" you ask. Well...here's the deal:

IF you are one of the ever so many that does not have the most common of blood types....there is a most strong chance that PRIVATE hospital ain't got your blood type and these private places do NOT share back and forth with the Caja hospitals. NO LIE. I now know of THREE instances where people bled to death in the private facilities because them places done runned out of BLOOD and the public facilities, which had what was needed, did NOT share. Oh, yeah...if you wanna take a chance on the "universal blood type", be my guest.

It ain't the U.S. of A., standard wise. Works for the Ticos; and that is all that is important.

Don't be arrogant....let that ambulance carry your bleeding ass (head, leg, dick, arm, gut...whatever) to a PUBLIC facility. You is in the 3rd Worldy, Homey.....

You have a good point. The best trauma centers hospitals in any major cities is the large public hospital. For example, LA County General is among the best in treating gunshot victims because they get so many of them in the ER. They have developed significant expertise and they have acquired the materials to do the job.

From recent experience I second the thought that the public facilities are very good at dealing with trauma. The Calderon Gaurdia facilities are old and show it but the staff is very professional and have a lot of experience dealing with traumatic injuries.

I believe the cost of Catolica is about twice the cost of Calderon but the facilities are much nicer. As for blood, I am B+. That blood type is not at all common here, as it is in the US.

My thanks to the fine doctors and staff at Calderon Gaurdia. I was 1 1/2 hours from San Jose at the time so she was transported by ambulance to Calderon. By the time I was able to get into town she was stable and talking but still critical. One day short of a week later she is doing my dishes.

I would love to see the specifics, as in facts, from the OP that supports this theory. It appears it is based on rumor and not much else at this point.

As to blood transfusions (without great detail)... O neg is the least desirable blood type to have when it comes down to needing a transfusion. O neg is the ONLY type an O neg individual can receive without a possible fatal transfusion reaction. On the other hand, if an individual is any other blood type (O+. A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, and AB-) they can receive O neg blood, assuming a successful cross match, without any adverse reaction. The assumption that one can only receive the specific type of blood they posses is based on ignorance and nothing else. ALL blood must be crossed matched for compatibility whether it is the same blood type one possesses or not.

I researched out blood banking in San Jose and as expected there is a central blood bank that provides all the blood needs to ALL hospitals in San Jose. Blood banking has become so complicated that I would not expect any hospital in SJO to collect and process their own blood supply.

Here's the link to San Jose central blood bank... http://www.laboratoriosanjose.com/

Dudette....I got nothing to prove to you, nor do I have any need OR desire to produce names, dates, and actions; or sources within the medical community of Costa Rica. I WILL provide these are all deep bleeding gunshot and/or knife wounds and I will provide these three confirmed dead are with the past 14 months. All friends of mine who were rushed to the private, high dollar, gringo, Oligarchy frequented outfits. They're the best right?

You know so little about Costa Rica as it presently is...., I am learning more and more, nursie, that it's amusing. There is WAR going on throughout that country.....believe it or not....I don't care. *shrug*

You know so much....go to any decent doctor in CR and they'll tell ya the same thing....ain't no sharing of blood between the facilities. If you think there is ANYTHING centralized that WORKS in CR, kindly pass the dutchie....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_type when was the last night that LPN was renewed honey?!

Oh yeah....and that "research" you done diddy....that outfit is a FOR PROFIT outfit.....go ahead...get a bleeding wound whilst in CR....see what happens.... ! 8)

CAJA hospitals in San Jose (San Juan Dios, Guardia, Mexico) all most likely offer excellent emergency room care but they are not trauma centers as we know that term in major city U.S. hospitals. Facilities in CAJA hospitals outside San Jose may or may not have adequate staffing and equipment for serious trauma cases. As far as the private hospitals to say "It ain't the U.S. of A., standard wise" is a very general statement without any evidence presented. There are many hospitals in the U.S. that go not offer first class care. Hospital Clinica Biblica, Hospital Cima and Hospital Clinica Catolica are all accredited by The Joint Commission International and all are recognized by major U.S. health insurance companies to render emergency service to their subscribers. Some even cover elective procedures at those hospitals for their members.

That Joint Commission stuff is all about money my good friend. Nothing more and nothing less.

You are correct that MANY hospitals in the US of A SUCK and you'd be better off in a back alley abortion clinic operation. However, the fact people travel to 3rd World ghettos to "save money" for hospital stuff is amusing. For elective stuff,...that's a different ball of wax. For cut and dried Medicine, I'm going to Mayo or Johns Hopkins or Cleveland Clinic. Buy the best and weep once. But that's just me. Shot in the gut and bleeding like a pig??? Take me to where the blood is!!

Irrespective, NONE of the data supplied refutes what I am asserting and I really could care less where anyone goes when they've acquired a bleeding wound.....or just have a bad, bad case of internal bleeding from hemorrhoids. Go where you want....but don't say you were not warned. Do what I do for MONEY and you just well....you just....well....you just KNOW things. Meanwhile political hacks work at the USA Embassy and "arrange" for the deaths of guys I know (my brothers?? Hell I don't know....) because they're arrogant little swarmy bastards who too believe in that "Joint Commission" full on JIVE which is set up ONLY for "medical tourism"...whatever the fucck that is. Ain't life grand?

and that is all we have is assertions! So lets just move on. FYI the cruz roja transports serious trauma cases to the closest medical facility not to the hospital you choose.

Again an assertion not backed up. The Joint Commission International has been set up by the Joint Commission to apply the same criteria to hospitals outside the U.S. that is used to accredit U.S. hospitals. Since you are a fan of Wikipedia, see your reply to Berk, here is their take on the Joint Commission and the Joint Commission International.

When one comes on here and makes statements such as you have made and all you have is apparent marginal, anecdotal evidence and not a scintilla more is it not surprising that some one would question you as to what you base your beliefs on? Then, in return, you make the above statement. No one is taking you seriously.

I can't talk about blood transfusions, but several years ago I was having heart arrhythmias and it gave me the opportunity to compare public and private hospitals.

I thought I was having a heart attack and called 911 for an ambulance. The Cruz Roja ambulance arrived at my house quickly and I asked to be taken to Clinica Biblica. I was told that Cruz Roja ambulances were only allowed to take patients to public hospitals, so ended up at Hospital Mexico. Despite a crowded waiting room, they got me into intensive care within about ten minutes. I was told the following day that I would need a catherization, but that their equipment for doing it was not working and I would need to go to another hospital.

I opted to be transferred by private ambulance to Hospital Cima. There they put me under local anesthesia and began the procedure, inserting a catheter going from my groin to my heart. After about a half hour of watching the video feed, they told me that they would have to use a larger size catheter and they didn't have any in stock, but that one would be delivered from a medical supply place in San Pedro. They then left the operating room, leaving me totally alone with the smaller catheter still going from my groin to my heart. It was nearly an hour and a half before anyone returned, at which time they completed the procedure.

Bottom line: try to have your medical emergencies in the States.

hahahahahahahaah.....and you're taken seriously Nursie? (LPN, right>!) hahahahahahahahahahaha 8) :P

Again, I got nothing to prove to you; nor do I have the least bit of inclination to disclose my sources and the way I receive data (although I've posted pictures of one primary methodolgy...). It's worked for a long, long time and shall continue to work for a long, long time. Some of us are "plugged in" and others of YOU are shooting blanks with closed eyes. You want a bleeding wound to be dealt with in a country where the blood supply ain't public but is owned and controlled by him that has....again....be my guest!!!

Mr. Irish Drifter: As for the Wikipedia....fan? Nah, it's just a reference point and in that very "article" it lists:

"Accreditation schemes recognised as providers of national healthcare accreditation services include:

- Malaysian Society for Quality in Health, or MSQH - based in Malaysia

Oh yeah, I'm headin' on down to Kuala Lumpur the next time I need some quality medical care!!!

....take a read below...sort it out....and if you're the KingBee, good on you. If you've been in CR all this time as you say you've been, and you're not ready to holler Uncle! ok then....you is the KingBee. (But....have you had a bleeding wound and required a transfusion? Were you ever subjected to what Senor El Tranquilo opines on? Or have you just been lucky? Some people are like that....the luck of the Irish and all that horse manure.). I don't think, however, it's all that different thant what senor Greengo notes below when it gets down to brass tacks. Each to their own. *shrug* (thread link supplied)....

I'm just glad I work in the aviation industry. You'd be hard put to find better travel insurance then what I get through my company. If I get seriously hurt in CR, I go to a hospital, get stable, and then they charter an aircraft to medivac me back to Canada :)

Of course, if some ham-handed amateur surgeon does get to cut me open and the worst happens, they'll pay to have my family come down and pick my corpse up too
