Graft, corruption and the law of the land are the rules of law in 2nd & 3rd world countries... The concept of fair play is a western concept...
I work for a large, international company with projects going on all over the world... We keep an slush-fund account open on each project to account for payola, graft payments, tea money, unrealized import duties, etc... Call it what you like, it's how business gets done...
We recently had one of our facilities overrun by para-militaries in west Africa with 5 personnel kidnapped and held for ransom... Never made the news, never will... Back door negotiations and a hefty payment secured their release, unharmed... You roll the dice and take your chances...
No real point to this diatribe, other than a wake up call for those with the western mindset who think they will get a fair shake in a foreign land...
Yup, but in my case, (I hear) that the outside lawyer paid the bribes so our corporate hands could be free from the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The western mindset should always be the ideal, even if the reality of the situation falls short. Its all about being a pragmatist. Anyway, I sent a note to the Brit Embassy about the British Lady and if they care about their citizen, they will look into it.
