I happen to enjoy Prolijos post. On the personal side, I think he is a "stand up" guy and I am proud to be his friend. I know this is not a voting issue but this my input. I wish I could write as elequently as him!

As if it wasn't clear: take a taxi! I learned the hard way tho I got off pretty easy. I used to stay at the clarion a lot when Nixon was there. A few years I walked back to the clarion from the DR at about 9pm. Two trannies attacked me. I ran like hell, got away but one got a punch in on my shoulder. Scared the crap outta me, but I was ok. Now I take a cab even I'm going a few blocks, after 6pm. Just do it like it says here on the board: wave a 1000 colone note in front the cabbie's face and tell him where you want to go. $2 later you are there. Done. 8)

Would 4 guys, in their 50s , need a taxi to walk over to , say, La Esquina de Buenas Aires and back? I enjoy walking about but not if it's unsafe. Thanks...........

You want to "work out" with a few crack addicts? Sounds exciting but (for god sakes) $2000 colones will buy a taxi. I remember running into the nutcases going from Hotel Presidente to Key Largo at midnight. It was like "Night Of The Living Dead" MOVIE. Fortunately a taxi pulled up.

All we can do is give advice, sometimes based on bitter experience. It's not the numbers of bad guys, it's the weapons they are increasingly carrying. Strongly advise saving the walkabouts for the daytime hours in the relatively safe barrios. Leave it those who don't have access to the Brothers' sage advice to suffer adverse consequences--don't you and yours be victimized. It's about being smart--if some ignoranti wants to call you a wuss, let'm--they weren't in the situation.

There are some people who know how to handle themselves in an unsafe urban environment at night. The great majority of tourists in the Gulch do not.

The next time you are in a slow moving taxi at night in San Jose, observe the locals in their environment. Can you tell which ones are the predators? Can you tell which ones are the regular Joe's (or regular Jose's) on their way home or to their jobs or to the local bar? Do you look like these people or even dress similar to them? If not, then stick with taxis. $2 is relatively cheap insurance.

i made the walk of the idiot last night. clarion, dunn inn (which is an absolutely great place to stay... cancel the Prez) , new fantasy, sportsman, across plaza, and to delray, down the hill to the presidente and back to delray. very alert very careful, here's the thing .... take a taxi! pay the dollar. one dollar or risk loosing it all? it's a big hill and at night even with a great wingman like i had (thanks D.) it's dangerous. Prez. is no charge for 1 girl, but they are going to hassle you about the girl and why bother. i recommend dunn inn and you can give me the $40 you saved and i will donate it to new fantasy.

If you were a mugger(s) intent on finding a rich gringo to mug on the streets of San Jose, where would you stand? The answer is down the hill from the Rey either towards Av Central (Presidente) or up past the Horshoe towards the Morazon. I have personally seen two muggings from the balcony of the NYB and they happened so fast that we barely made it to the front door before they had knocked down older guys grabbed their cash and ran. Walking with a chica makes you stand out more. 2 bucks is cheap insurance.

Yeah, wasn't that were the rash of muggings was going on about 2 years ago?

Four guys just means that the criminals will get 4 times the amount of cash. Take a taxi.

Looking or dressing like a local means nothing, for the most part they don't walk the streets at night either. My mother-in-law (Tica) got punched in the face for 2,000 colones a couple of months back. Gringos aren't the only ones being targeted.

A larger group is safer, but still not impervious to an armed robbery. This is one of those topics that gets beat to death. I have found that some guys will walk no matter what to avoid paying a taxi. Your risk goes up.

Probably because they got the taxi with one of them magic meters; sort of like the duck that laid the golden egg only in reverse. God help me, Greengo is rubbing off on me. :D

Well, obviously it depends on what time of night we are talking about. Sunset in San Jose is around 6pm every day, plus or minus. San Jose is not like the movie Pitch Black where as soon as night falls, millions of winged predators emerge to kill everything living on the planet. To suggest that the regular people of San Jose use taxis to go home from work or take taxis to/from their bus stops after dark for the most part is wrong. They can't afford taxis. And they often need to do some shopping before going home.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_Black_(film)

As the night goes on, there are fewer and fewer pedestrians, but there are still a good number who can't afford taxis even if their job (security guard, cashier, worker at tienda etc) doesn't let out until 9pm or 10pm. Unlike the people who get out of work earlier, these folks will usually go straight home by as safe a method as they can manage or afford.

In addition, I didn't mean to suggest that dressing like a local (predator or prey) was a viable survival strategy on the streets late at night. I agree that people should just take a cab at night and pay the $2. However I was commenting on the inability of most outsiders to even recognize the difference between the predators and potential prey. And handling oneself correctly in an unsafe urban environment at night can be as simple as going straight to their destination as quickly and directly as they can best afford. Often walking part (or all) of the way is the only affordable option. That doesn't mean these local people (prey) are invulnerable to the bad guys. It just means that they can raise their odds of a successful trip.

Of course, gringos dressing in Hawaiian shirt and shorts while walking around during the day will attract more predators than guys dressed normally (even in bad urban areas in the US), but that's a different debate.
