Your point concerning AF I would liken to saying that attacking Japan after they attacked us on 12/7/1941 made the U.S. unsafe because we ended up in a war with Japan.

The fact that the U.S. stationed troops in Europe and is a member of NATO provided NATO member states an umbrella of security that allowed them to spend less of their GDP on defense and more on social programs. That was the point I was referring to and its pretty much undisputed.
