This is an old but still disturbing pattern. Think of all the "Rebel" armies in Africa that used ch!ld-soldiers. The Balkans too (Serbia, et al.) Nasty business, robbing ch!ldren of their ch!ldhoods, especially that way (brings sociopathdom to the fore in many and irreversibly coarsens all of them).

I highly doubt such a project will happen. The supposed justification is to control the flow of drugs and guns, and compared to our anti-immigrant rhetoric that actually makes some sense.

Mexico has seen around 30,000 drug-related murders in the last 4 years, a semi-civil war.

In the US we're complaining about there being too many gardeners and janitors coming here to, (according to Arizona gov. Jan Brewer) "mostly to commit violent crimes."

Our country is a disgrace and any North American who comes to Latin America bringing that same baggage is a double disgrace : P

Having said that, Central American immigrants who pass through Mexico are treated very badly by police and gangsters alike, and that it is an issue of hypocrisy. (The government isn't really worried about immigrants, since they're headed for the US not Mexico, but they also don't seem to care much for their welfare.)

There is a pretty good movie called "Sin Nombre" that gets into this and also into the issue of Mara gangs.
