Yes, another tipping thread. :P But this one deals with tipping madness in the US. There is now a tip jar everywhere.

No wonder many chicas in Costa Rica are asking for tips now. They got it from gringos who are tip obssessed.

This morning, I dropped my car off for service and I was running late, so I took a taxi to work (instead of subway). I had no cash on me, so I paid with a CC. It's all computerized now, so it shows your total on the touch-screen and then you can add a tip.

They have the tip pre-programmed as 20%, 25%, and 30%. WTF!

30% to a cabbie? $5 tip on a $17 fare? That's what I tip for CIM. 8)

Btw-I typed in $2.00. I'm never going to tip a cab driver more than 10-15%.

And the guys do bring it with them. I talked with a fellow last night, asked about the girl he was with while she was powdering her nose. He told me "when I am with a girl this fine, I never worry about the $100, in fact I give her more than that". He thought that the added money showed his respect and admiration and that she would like him more because she didn't have to negocio.

I told him about when I used to guide fishermen. The Japanese were the "best". Repeatedly, whoever was the senior businessman would approach me and tell me that he would give me $100 for every fish I hooked and handed off to him. Of course, I was going to hook and hand-off fish anyway but they got such a kick out of giving me that $100 for something I would have done for free. Did I think, "oh, what a nice guy, showing his respect and admiration for my fishing skills"? No. I thought they were chumps who didn't know the value of money.

sorry, but this is all I could think--- did you tell him/her that???

But you are right on the tip jar every where, often around here right placed next to a donation jar for some charity, almost a few times dropped my change into the tip and not donation jar by mistake.

Yeah, it's an eye-opener to recently-arrived foreigners who visit the US for the first time. They do not understand our culture of heavy-tipping. Tipping is understandable when it comes to the underpaid waitresses or waiters in a Jersey diner... but when a Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks cashier has a jar out for "TIPS"... that's taking it too far.

Tipping is about the person leaving the tip and how they want to be perceived; the stud that tips big and does not negotiate in the DR wants to be perceived as "Heap Big Indian Chief" I am sure that if you scrathed under the surface a little bit you would find a scared little boy looking for acceptance. As far as the tip jar goes, very infrequently will I throw any change in there; they want tips when their job at least pays minimum wage? Phuck that 8) 8) Waite staff at a restaurant normally rate 15-20% for good service and less for poor service as they don't make minimum wage. But, hey when I sit in a sport bar and watch the game fr 3 hours, I will drop a pretty good tip to the hottie tending bar; half because I am taking up space and half because she rubs her tits on my back when she passes behind me as I consider that part of the service. :D :D

About two years ago the taxi that drove me from the ATL airport to my home went the long way and the fare was $65 for an 18-19 min ride. I complained about the way route he took as my fare was usually $50 bucks or less. He then went on to ask about a tip. I told him that if he wasn't making enough of a cut off a $65 dollar -19 minute ride then I couldn't and/or wasn't going to help him. He tole me that he works for a company and gets paid a little per hour plus tips. My TIP was to get his own taxi or get a new job.

I don't know how they do it in ATL but in NY, the cabbies that work for somebody don't get paid by that company. They lease the taxi from the company who owns it for 12 hours/day for xxx per week. So they keep whatever they make in fares, less the lease fee they pay each week. Last I heard a couple of years ago, it was $1000/week to lease a cab. So anything you make over $1000 in fares for the week is yours pay, minus gas. A taxi medallion in NYC costs anywhere from $400,000-600,000    , depending on how it's bought, so few drivers actually own their own cabs.

Got hit by a cabbie with a rigged meter yesterday at the HDR... The fare from the HDR to the SL was 1250 colones and the meter was spinning like a top during the ride... When we got to the SL, I argued with the cabbie that the meter was wrong and I wasn't going to pay it... I gave him 800 colones, which was still too much, got out of the taxi with my companion and the phucker didn't say a word... YMMV...

Maudib, same thing happened to me in CR a few weeks ago. The meter was totally off. I've taken metered cabs before to and from the SL/DR and they are usually around 500 colones. This one cab's meter was all over the place with the fare ending up being near 1300 colones. I think there's a 'Gringo' button on the back of the meter that they can press when they see one of us get in the cab. :)
