It kind of is. Most of the bartenders rotate bars. Sometimes the girls that work the Monkey Bar or Little Marlin only make 5k colon a shift, like on a slow Monday or Tuesday. That is less than they paid for food and taxi .

The owners hoped the Little Marlin would magically become a favorite hang out for high rollers but first of all its so damn hot in there, some nights, and it has no ventilation. And Second, well, I just had the first.

Its closed for renovations right now but you are right, its a fail.

BTW... Mia (who now has black hair) might be taking some time off to fix her implant that got literally twisted around her body in a fight with Yendry (another yappy bitch I'm sure many are familiar with). She actually broke Yendry's nose, then Yendry pulled her out of a pirate taxi by her hair and they fought and thats where the implant came lose.

All you chops go on about bartenders....I laugh. Obviously the bartenders are where it is at.....why else would they be there? I have been a chop for many years....however, persitstence pays off. Mia bartender - could be the best ever...but time is cold to chicas. Other bartenders, especially Anabella, get the best of us chops.....I think they are the best thing about CR

Agreed. Haven't been impressed with Del Rey bartenders as of late however. They need to do a massive overhaul. Hold a recruitment day in Desamparados and start fresh. Even Fernanda is getting old and fat.

My special message to the DR Bartendistas: Just serve me my beer, return my correct change before the next year and I will tip you an appropriate amount; Expect no Jaeger Shots or 100% tip so you will think I am important; other than that, I got 200 hookers willing to rub their tits on my back, so why care about a bartender? :) :)

Agreed. Call me crazy -- OK, you're crazy :D -- but I like a good bartender. I do enjoy the chica bartenders, especially on vacation, but sometimes I just want a professional bartender. Got spoiled by one in Atlanta a few years back. Alex, a rather smart-looking gray-haired fellow who always wore a 3-piece and a tie to work, never complained about anything, and when not actually serving a customer, stood facing the bar with his hands crossed behind his back. Answering his cellphone would have been sacrilegious and a disgrace to the profession, almost as much as not knowing how to make a respectable drink. In fact, the only time he ever took out his cellphone was to browse the internet for sports scores (only when requested by a customer), and he had all the major sites programmed in. You were always "Mister" whatever, and he knew everything about the local area. Never had to pay a parking ticket for infractions incurred while sitting at his bar either -- really good customers got out of worse or got a referral to a top-notch lawyer (tell them Alex sent you). Fantastic mob connections, which meant pretty much anything you wanted, anytime you wanted. He never mopped a floor or restocked a bar -- that's for barbacks. And... he never, ever, ever, EVER, asked you to buy him a drink. Real bartenders never drink on the job. And if you ask for a beer (bottle or draft) they will glady pour it, but you can see the look of disappointment on their face. Real bartenders not only know what a barspoon is, but also know what it's for.

Professional bartending is a dying profession, but if you can find a good one, consider yourself lucky.

About the "Mister" part above, I once told him "Alex (he insisted you call him by his first name), how many times do I have to tell you to call me John." His reply was "at least one more time, Mister Smith". I accused him in front of another customer of stealing that line from Pirates of the Caribbean. The other customer corrected me, insisting Alex had been using that line since the late 1980's. Considering some of the clientele in that bar, I often wonder if Orlando Bloom or someone higher up the Hollywood food chain was a regular customer at that bar.

Great post and I too would frequent a bar like that, however, the bartenders at the Del Rey are the antithesis of everything you describe; they cheat you, pretend to do a shot with you to pocket the cost, talk on their cells, take forever with your change (some speculate because they hope you forget) are bitchy and think they are hotter then they are. That's why I concentrate on the whores in front of the bar, rather than the ones behind the bar. :D :D

Which -- in a roundabout way, and after 2 or 3 drunken posts on my part -- is pretty much my point. They're eye-candy. SL et. al. know we like it, so they put them there. But keep your eyes on the prize. The real treats are on the same side of the bar as you. Happy hunting.

I remember once walking in and my bartender asked how I was doing. Without thinking, I replied "a little worn out, rough day at work, tired of going home alone." About 10 minutes later (I did not see him on the phone) 2 smokin' hot hookers come up, one on either side of me, and one of them says "rough day, was it?" Barkeep smiles, passes over a drink for each girl (he knew what they drank) and says "first round is on me, but the rest is up to you."

I once commented that I really liked a pizza place around the corner, but they were already closed. Again, I did not see him on the phone, but about one hour later, he laid a pie on the counter and said "enjoy your dinner, mister smith".

A real bartender makes you feel like Ted Kennedy or George Clooney, even though you're just Joe Blow.

  if any bartender made me feel like Ted (dead) Kennedy, I would stop frequenting that bar

Agreed, but it wasn't always like that and they do need to clean house over there.

Yeah, I get it, but the morons in front of the bar want the eye-candy, trouble is, it phucks up the entire situation as it leads to the unintended consequences of bitchy bartenders who see you as nothing more than a potential mark to be ripped off and not a customer. I would think you would have to be in one of the sleaziest hellhole bars in the states to have that kind of experience. Going into the DR, you have to prepare yourself; have the closest to exact change as possible, put the credit card in the room safe, watch how much you drink, and never run a tab. The funny thing is that they actually cop an attitude when they know you are closely monitoring whats going on.

But, I am sure there are guys on here who will argue that the bartenders in the DR are goddesses that deserve the shots they get bought, not to get upset when we don't get our change, or get shorted, that we should tip like drunken sailors, etc, etc.

Well, I am killing time anyways, so by all means...... :D :D

Well, they might have been pretty good drinking buddies, if they didn't discuss politics. Srlm, your posts are fantastic, I agree about good career bartenders, a dying profession just like career waiters. I too like the DR bartenderessas like Mia for eye candy, but for service, forget it. I sit there wondering who paid for their breast and butt implants, and try not to inhale too deeply so I don't get plastic poisoning.
