This is a new film about Mark Zuckerberg, who founded Facebook. At age 26, he is worth about $26 billion. My local paper gave the film four stars (our of four), despite the fact that the filmmaker took a few liberties with the facts. The flick kept me on the edge of my seat, and makes me want to read up on the events. Zuckerberg has settled a number of suits by early collaborators, and is facing at least one more.

Check out dickipedia.com for more info on the guy.

He and his filthy minions did everything this side of outright bribery to keep this film from being released. That such an anti-social @sshole got so rich on a "social networking" Website is beyond irony. My gag reflex kicks in every time I think of Facebook.

I didn't hear about the effort to kill-off the film.

You may be a bit harsh, considering that Facebook has certainly struck a chord, with 500 million members, and untold numbers of people getting reacquainted.

In any event, the film is pretty riveting.

To clarify: Brother Panther's points are well taken; my comments were about this schmuck Zuckerberg himself and not about this excellent, fictionalized account of him and the phenomenon he created. Here's my fallback option--a NYTimes review: http://movies.nytimes.com/2010/09/24/mo ... ocial.html

My personal objections to the social network phenomenon don't matter so I'll restrain myself from commenting.

The movie was good, even Justin Timberlake did a good job as the Napster dude. I would be very interested to know what his original partner settled for.

Like it or not, the original idea for Facebook was brilliant.

Show me a wealthy man and I show you one that has at some point or time done something against the grain to get there. It's a dog eat dog world out there and if you want to get to that level or anywhere near it you have to bring out the killer instinct. Hey it's not personal it's just business.

The unfortunate fact is that it wasn't Schmuckerberg's as the movie makes clear. Bill Gates got his great boost from a fraud; Schmuckerberg from intellectual property theft--so it goes. But hey just so you don't think I'm an utter chucklehead, here's a NYTimes Business article about Facebook's COO, Sheryl Sandberg--it's a balanced article about the person that makes F'book "go":

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/03/business/03face.html

Oh and about folks getting reacquainted via F'book? There's a NJ guy that got reacquainted with his Maker via F'book cyberbullying.

Jazz is a bit jealous because he is worth only about a billion. BTW, I believe that the former partner sued and settled for about $90 million. Jazz would say that this is chickenfeed, something he would not even bend over to pick up off the pavement.

Can't I just dislike somebody without y'all ascribing baser motives to it? I don't envy this guy; pity is closer to it. And yes, I would and have picked up dimes off the sidewalk--for that large a sum, I'd break out the Machete (great movie BTW--Danny Trejo finally gets his pock-marked due as a leading man).
More stuff in the game (as if the serious unaddressed privacy issues weren't enough:

How's it feel to be bought and sold akin to a bag of potatoes? At least with a straight-up commercial site like Amazon.com or eBay.com, I understand it's BUSINESS--F'book was supposed to be about interconnectivity, relationships between people. I breathlessly await your answer.

Unfortunately no, because if you dislike a successful businessman you are automatically branded an anti-business, Commie pinko, liberal tree hugger.

P.S. Oops, I broke my own rule about no politics in CRT. Ban me, quick!

Jazz, it seems to me that Facebook is doing nothing different than TV, magazines, search sites, etc., do. You tune in one of these and you are hit with ads, which make money for the network, etc. And, of course, the more people who tune in, the more the network, etc., make. Schmuckerberg was smart enough to get in on this quickly and big-time. Moveover, it is difficult for us to judge him relative to his treatment of various collaborators, et al. Lawyers and, in some cases, the courts will resolve this.

Jazz, your envy is not a pretty thing to see.

I have to split now and hit this landsman up for a loan.

I say again for those that don't get it: There's no "green-eyed monster" lurking in me--plenty of guys have billions and they are welcome to it (Warren Buffet comes immediately to mind). And I don't at all mind commerce, welcome it in fact (I just bought 13 CDs/ DVDs off Amazon.com, some from big retailers like goHastings)--it's the stealthiness of F'book (and Google for that matter)--neither gives you much choice to opt-out, if you even know what it is they are doing. Use it, enjoy it, talk about and promote it--just don't bother trying to convince me. BTW if you have time look up Mark Zuckerberg's F'book page--good luck with that as it doesn't exist. Do you trust a chef that won't eat his own cooking? Me either.
