Ave.9 around corner from SL is also where Scuba saw a guy jump out of a car and put a gun to a gringo's head who was walking with a chica. But don't worry it could never happen to you!

Another useful precaution for the brotherhood: When walking between the SL and the Castillo at night, if you see a bar of soap on the ground do NOT bend over to pick it up.

We have beat this subject to death over the years. Nowhere in downtown is particularly safe at night. Incidents do happen to gringos and tourists alike. For the majority of guys on vacation an extra 2 bucks is a tiny price to pay to be safe compared to the typical drinking/mongering daily budget. Is it any more dangerous than many downtowns in the US? Probably not but most of us do not walk around unfamiliar areas where we stand out back home either.

There is a very, very good reason why the word "NEVER" can be found in the rule: "NEVER WALK THE STREETS OF SJ AT NIGHT".

On my recent trip I considered walking from NF to SL at night --thinking "It's not that far". (NF is open at night now). A nice chica reminded of the aforementioned rule.

On a related note, I remember reading that don't catch a cab in front of HDR. The reason, I'm assuming, is because they're crooks. The question then is where do you get a cab if you're leaving HDR? Thanks in advance.

Thers's a lot of "I've done it alot and no problem". When does it make it impossible? Post-20 walks?

Come on, use your head. Take a cab if you want to reduce your risk of being robbed/injured to a minimum. Walk if your ok with saving $2 and increasing risk. It's when your on your 21st walk and your most comfortable that it'll happen, you'll be kicking yourself as you recover in the hospital.

I'm fit, trained, and confident. I still don't want to actually have the confrontation, deal with a doctor. If I'm successful at fighting, I also don't want to spend time answering questions to the police as we magically learn that the guy I hurt has a family member or friend on the police force... Maybe I'll just try to remain calm, use my head and be safe, avoid confrontation, and have fun with the chicas. Bottom line: take the cab.

Exit the BM on the Monkey Bar side not the KL side. Hail a cab heading west on avenida 1. Make sure he uses the taxi meter.

What I do is wait for a cab letting off a passenger and grab that. Hotel taxis even in the civilian hotels are notorious for over-charging. This last trip I was gonna grab a cab at the curb nearest the Balmoral and the driver himself warned me off and quoted his price. Must be my kindly face.

It's not us, it's our money (and maybe a chance to get back at straight-john Gringos) that cause me concern about TVs. Brother BKTuna pulled me back one night from walking into a situation where a TV was servicing a client on the street--coulda been nasty, that one.

Minor overcharging, I can live with... what I'm more worried about is kidnapping / robbery scenario from getting into the wrong cab in front of HDR. Any safety tips on this? Are the red cabs with yellow triangle generally safe?

I also will wait just outside HDR on the KL side and wait for a red cab with yellow triangle and tell them "LA or SL....1,000 colones", most will agree and if they say no, the second cab will agree.
