Their website mentions air conditioning in select rooms. How common of an occurrence is this? While it can get pretty hot in SJO, normally it does not. But I like AC at night because sometimes the car/taxi noise keeps me from getting a good nights sleep.[/quote]

I never heard any noise to speak of and it was in the 60's at night, mid 70's during the day. I had the same concerns that you did.

In all my many stays at the Castillo.....I have never used the air conditioner; just doesn't get that warm at night.

The only times I have used the AC is if I had to use the dehumidifier, which puts out a lot of heat. I know this is wasteful, but there are sometimes during the rainy season when some of the rooms need it. Mold makes me sneeze. As far as using it as a white noise generator, the exhaust fan in the john is usually enough to drown out the dogs in the parking lot down the hill or most of the other noise.

arrived at the Hotel Castillo at 11:00pm. Checked in, took a quick shower and asked the guy at the lobby desk where I might get a beer, as the bar there was closed. That night I found Sportsmens Lodge.

Are you sure it was the Sportsmen ? :?:

Sportsmen is usually a "ghost town" by 11 PM.

Yeah, I hear you Veelee.......pretty hard to escape the noise from the barking dogs and the car burglar alarms going off periodically throughout the night. Earplugs take care of the problem.

Agree hole heartedly. I hear a car alarm go off here in town like the CR ones and I feel like i'm back there.

Other then that Castillo is my hotel of choice. Darren and staff look after you.

Those are EXACTLY why I like having the air on at night. All those little distractions that prohibit a deep sleep. But it is those from 0400-0800 that really piss me off.....LOL I enjoy the cool SJO nightime air, but I value my sleep more. Perhaps I should try earplugs, again?

Does anyone have an alternative email address for the Castillo? I've tried the info@hotelcastillo.biz a few times and it comes back as undeliverable.

hotelcastillo@racsa.co.cr will work.

I have stayed at Castillo five times. Darren does a great job and it has always been great. I will be back there the end of November.

For those not in the know, the parking lot next door is also down about 30 feet so the dogs aren't all that loud. It is much less of an issue than it was at say El Sesteo when I used to stay there. The back of the hotel is a cliff down to a river valley that contains the zoo. The view is spectacular. It drops down a ways more after that. One can catch the whiff of barbeque sometimes from JRs but no bus fumes!

It's available. The base station is on the first floor by the computer in the lounge area, so I don't know what kind of signal, if any at all, you'll get upstairs or in the new wing.
