Seems like there are two types of mongers here...those who prefer mongering on their own, and those who run in packs.

I have never been down to C.R. with anyone that I know, and haven't really known anyone down there, outside of a casual conversation with the gringo sitting or standing next to me. I enjoy being alone on these trips, cuz I can truly focus on the business at hand, without having to worry about someone else's agenda. Compound that with a wing-man who doesn't speak Spanish, or doesn't handle himself well, and you have someone who will slow you down and even hinder you to a large degree.

Having said that, I can see how it's fun to share some down time with other like-minded gringos. I think the Sportsman's provides this kind of opportunity. I think I am more the single operator type, who would like to shoot the shit with other gringos during my downtime, or over some food.

I will be meeting up with someone I know on my next trip down there. I have not ever met him, but we have known each other via the internet (from a Colombia-oriented forum) for a couple of years, and have talked on the phone alot. He is someone who I will have a good time with. Loves the ladies, knows how to have fun, and not someone that I will have to babysit.

So are you guys solo-hunters or pack-animals?

I love to incorporate music whenever possible. From Whitesnake: "Here I go again on my own...goin' down the only road I've ever known. Like a drifter I was born to walk alone. And I've made up my mind, I ain't wastin' no more time. So here I go again."

I like running in a pack. I enjoy having a wingman to watch my back and viceversa. Plus i dont mind translating.

Although i will say that one rotten egg can spoil the entire experience. I remember my last trip we hooked up with this guy. He was pretty picky and he would complain allot. Not to mention, he liked to order people around. Just bad vibes man. Kept spouting off "In Rio things are...." dude then stay in Rio.

I don`t mind sharing my local knowledge and occasionally I enjoy taking a few guys on a hunting excursion, but when it comes right down to it...I prefer to hunt alone.

I like the question!
It is great to have some buddies when you are between hunts. But as someone mentioned earlier in this thread, "one bad egg..."
I spent 2 nights at DR solo a month ago. The hunting was great, but there were periods of boredom in between. Also, every time I ask people if they are CRT members they look at me like I'm nuts. (which I am).
We need some sort of sign. I'm still in favor of the torn coaster on the table.

What i did was buy myself a CRT Baseball jersey which i will wear on my first day around BM to see if i can avoid the pitfalls of missing everyone.

There seems to be a pattern.
It goes something like this. On my first few trips down other than an occasional conversation with the guy next to me at the bar it was 100 percent on my own. I liked it that way I felt comfortable and secure. Between encounters I spent a lot of time walking the city sleeping and reading. But after a few trips developed a taste for conversation with my fellow travelers. But when it came time for the purpose of the trip its back to myself and concentration on the sport.

I still walk the city but the book thing is gone and I don't sleep as much. I actually look forward to five o'clock and happy hour. So much so I don't make any dates before 6. What is a date? It's 5:30 and you're halfway through your second beer with the boys at happy hour and you see this gorgeous thing walk in but you just not ready for it. Tell the boys you have to go to too the man's room. Slip over to that lovely young thing tell her how beautiful she is but you're occupied for the next few hours. But if she is still available at 8 you would love to spend some time with her. I've gotten pretty good at that. If it's late night tell her you would like to see her at 6 the next evening. Most of them do not come until after six ( the good ones anyway). But if she has a guaranteed date for six about 50 percent of the time she will show.

So like most of you I prefer to haunt by myself but seek the Company of others when not in pursuit.

I am kind of a combination.I enjoy having a buddy to maybe hang around with but I may wander to anouther bar if one is close on my own and always tell them they can take a taxi anytime they get ready to move on.I also don't mind in the least going pretty much anywhere on my own and often do.I guess I like the variety of having a freind or two around but when I get serious in the hunt I move alone.Iguess I kind of watch and observe with freinds if they are around but it really is not a big deal one way are the outher and move along to my next destination as I chose.rbc100

Finally a post to which, as one just SIX DAYS from his first CR visit, I feel I can contribute to (although I've been lurking myself to death lately). I monger alone. Sure - I'll chat with others in a bar... but I'm especially fond of my own company.

On the 350+ days a year when I'm NOT on a monger trip... I spend every waking moment playing the role of someone's father, someone's son, someone's boss, someone's teacher, somone's spouse, someone's consultant, or someone's brother.

I SO anticipate those 2-3 trips (of 5-7 days each) per year when I can play the role of "nobody's nothing" for several days straight. I need, every so often, a few days when it ALL ABOUT ME. And guess what? When I return to the States - I find that I'm a much better father, son, boss, teacher, spouse, consultant, brother. Hmmm - must be the BBBJs.

haha...I love it. I think I'm the same way.

I love the freedom I have....when I wanna screw, I screw. When I wanna eat, I eat. When I wanna sleep, I sleep. I have all the major biological functions covered, and all on my own timetable.

Having a good wingman is great. Going solo isn't bad. Being saddled with a bad wingman bites.

I always hunt solo; however, I also enjoy the conversation at the BM or News Cafe with other CRT members or other tourists. I have always stayed at the Presidente on each trip, and am thinking about trying the Sportsman for my next visit.
