Your AT&T phone will not work there - at least mine does not. Your best bet is to call AT&T technical support and ask for an unlock code for your phone. They've always been very helpful with me in that regard. Then, when you get there, buy a sim card at the airport. You can buy them for $5, $10, or $20, depending on the number of prepaid minutes you want.

My A.T.&T. cell phone works fine there. But before your trip, you've got to call your cell phone provider and have them turn on the international roaming feature to your phone. If memory serves, it's an additional $3.99 per month for this feature. Once you've done this, simply turn on your phone when you're in CR, and it'll search for a signal. Then it'll dial in to the ISC network, and you're ready to make a call. But beware, as it's around $6 or $7 per minute for phone calls. There are much cheaper options out there, but this will work in a pinch. Do a search on the forum and you'll see a bunch of different alternatives.

Pura Vida,
MG

If you have international roaming enabled and your handset is capable of 1800 MHz it will work. I use a quad band Nokia 6085 and it works fine.

Keep in mind that it’s rather expensive, 2.29 per minute or 1.99 if you have the world traveler plan for voice and 19.50 per meg for data. Costa Rica is NOT one of the 100 countries included in the global data plan if you have it so you are paying as you go full fare.

If you receive a call and let it go to voice mail you still get charged at the international roaming rate.

To dial the states it’s 001 then the 10 digit number. To dial a local number in Costa Rica just dial the 8 digit number.

Have a good trip

You can buy the unlock code on e-bay for about $ 3.00. It is e-mailed to you within 24 hours. I have unlocked two phones this way.

Health & happiness to all....................

Moved off AT&T last year. I now enjoy the T Mobile service. I got it for the WiFi tethering to my computer. No excess charges for data usages. Sorry off point. I was one of the Beta for the Google Voice. If you have an Android phone you need to get a Google Voice number. Then download the free app. Follow the directions for set up. I have it ask for all outgoing calls if to use Cell number or to use Google. When you are out of US turn the phone to airplane mode. Let is cycle, then hit the WiFi button. You will be able to receive calls, make calls in the US and to receive texts.

A. The number is free.
B. The cost to call US to CR is $.06 per min.
C. When the states are calling you they don't know where you are.
D. All voice mail is recorded and transcribed for you then sent via email.
E. You can for free send and receive texts also.
F. My favorite is it announces all calls. You accept or reject. If its a telemarketer or a pain in the ass, you hit a button and next time they call they get a no longer in service message.

I hear they are supposed to have it or soon for the IPhone. Hope this helps.

P.S. I still carry an unlocked Samsung i7500 gsm for the Chica calls when in CR or Col.
