An American--Steven Edelson-- was killed yesterday in PuertoViejo, Limon. You may find the article at http://www.diarioextra.com/2010/setiemb ... sos01.php; the article says that he was shot in the head from behind at 10 in the morning when he was sunbathing and reading a book at the beach. The police (OIJ) concluded that the motive was not robbery because the 65 year-old man had all his belongings. This is worrisome! :x

Here's the story in A.M. Costa Rica today:

Puerto Viejo visitor slain while relaxing on beach
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

A 65-year-old U.S. citizen visiting Puerto Viejo de Limón on the Caribbean coast met his death Thursday morning when someone shot him as he relaxed on Playa Cocles there. The man was identified by the last name of Edelson. He was believed to have been shot in the back of the head. Judicial agents inspected the scene and the body was to be taken to the judicial morgue.

Officers said they did not think that the crime was a robbery. Agents are trying to check into the man's background to see what relationship he had with the area. He had been staying at a nearby hotel. Such a crime suggests either that the murder was planned or that the criminal was faced with a wave of panic after he committed the murder.

Cause it's beautiful there. I'm making my third trip there in a few months although I'll admit, the lifestyle there is not meant for everybody.

I enjoy the Caribean side, because all you other old farts, go to the Pacific!

Really, the culture is totally different, land prices, food, total cost of living is less then half of the valley. It is no more dangerous then the gulch or anywhere else. Less dangerous then Jaco in all, but central Limon. You have to be able to take the humidity.

It is kind of like the wild west was in the 1800's in USA. This guy that got shot, most likely did some one wrong, along the way. Some one took the initiative to do something about it, and the law will probably look the other way during the investigation. Especially if it was a drug related execution.

Both are about the same. Most (not all) that get into DANGER in Jaco or Puerto Viejo are doing something they shouldn't be doing!

Because the food is different from the food in the rest of the country. The waves are good from December till April.

You are right on Greengo!! I believe more major dealing in PV area of transient drugs then Jaco, results in crimes of the nature of the dude shot in the head. Jaco is possibly more street crime and dealing of consumer drugs that have made it into the market. The Rasta population does keep a distinct air though on the caribean side with thier culture. Which is safer? Stay away from the drugs and be attentive, you should be fine either side.
DO NOT VENTURE ONTO THE LONG LONELY BEACHES WITH OUT PLENTY OF FRIENDS WATCHING EACH OTHERS BACKS. Carry a good walking stick and no valuables.

NORTH OF LIMON IN PARTICULAR IS A PENINSULA PAST A PLAYA BONITA, MANY THUGS IN TREES WAITING. It is tempting to take a walk with a chica to get seclusion from the boogy boarders, for a quicky, but do not!

BEWARE OF PARQUE NATIONAL CAUHUITA WALKING TRAIL ON THE PENINSULA, EVEN THE MONKEYS SWING DOWN FROM THE TREES AT YOU. THEY WILL STEAL YOUR CIGS AND HAT AND THROW THEM BACK AT YOU ONE AT A TIME FROM THE TREES, PLENTY OF THUGS HERE ALSO WATCHING FOR OPPORTUNITY

Sorry for the CAPS, but if it helps one brother stay safe.....
