Passed thru Miami last night en route to Tampa. That's the last time I fly thru there. I'll pay the extra baggage fees on Spirit, or drive to Orlando. Seriously, is there a worse major airport in the US than Miami? Took me 50 to 55 minutes to get thru Immigration! Got stuck in a line that had two separate parties from 'the islands' somewhere who were not US citizens and were in the wrong line. Had to have their photos and fingerprints taken. I guess they can't read English. Then, 55 minutes after landing, the luggage is not at the carousel!? Had to wait another 15 minutes for the bags to arrive. You have to walk about a mile back and forth. I know, many people need the exercicse, etc., but after a week of partying day and night, and carrying two carry-on bags, I don't want that exercise at that time. Finally arrived at the connecting flight gate one hour and 20 minutes after landing! All that after sitting on the tarmac for thirty minutes after landing, waiting for a gate to become available, as our gate had a plane there with mechanical problems.

I'd rank Tampa as the most convenient airport in the US, followed closely by Orlando. Miami...no mas!

2 years ago I had a similar experience at MIA, but the airport gods must be good to me, Over the past 2 years, I have had over 20 flights through Miami and counting, never more than 30 minutes from deplaning to departure gate for me... I used to avoid it like the plague as well, ever since they doubled the price to do through DFW. Maybe being 1st off the plane and priority lines help in security, plus not checking bags home.

Just a tip for you Miami connection guys. Coming into immigration, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, go to the far right closest to Booth 1, you will be glad you did...

You probably only a once in a blue moon experience IMHO. Lately it has been the best and most consistent route south for me..

Gee I keep reading how bad MIA is, my last trip though lines went really fast 10 minutes tops, not worth using the speed pass I paid for, maybe next time. But I will say they could use some better signs on how to get from one end to the other end.. Some one's advice here on how to find the elevator, was accurate. I was at the elevator right away, then I some air port genius employee thought I was lost and gave me direction to some where else  wasted 20 minutes back tracking to where I wa.
On the way back once out of immigration I was trying to find how to get to the Tri Rail for future reference, and was sent from one end of the airport to the other end 3 times by the "Official Help Booth" finally gave up on that and asked a Non airport cop who was working security for the Governor to stop in, he did not know, but asked his buddies and they showed me where to go ( not to hell, the bus stop) .

But In Jan 10 I try again, and we see,

We all have our bad airports, but how many of them were ever designed for the amount of traffic they are expected to carry these days. Most probably need to torn down and completely replaced,ex-ORD ( not practical)remember most are pre 9/11 so that adds a whole extra layer of stuff they were not designed for. Us old guys can still remember the days when any one could walk up to the gate. So they add and adjust and add some more, rebuild a little, change again with limited funds. Unless of course every one is willing to pay some taxes or fees to speed up the reconstructions and do it right , and that's not a very popular idea .

I recently did two things I said I would never do: 1) Book on AA and 2) with a connection through MIA. A low Christmas fare to MDE on AA with quick travel times made me do it. :|

I no longer fly out of Miami any longer also but I do miss it for all the hot Latina eye candy to look at. Now days for me just about everything is out of Houston.

I had the pleasure of spending last night at the Red Roof Inn near Miami airport.

My AA flight (972) from SJO landed in Miami on time, but it took 2 hours to get to the gate, so everybody missed their connection. There was a backup because of the storm and the airport was closed for a while. My flight to NY was the last one for the evening. So I got to spend a wonderful 7 hrs at the hotel. And of course, AA wouldn't pay for the room.
