Somewhere within walking distance of the Glutch. Simple One/two bedroom with good water system and AC. Also how do you find a realtor and make it happen. Thanks.

Sounds like he's looking to buy.

(FYI-Gringo + real estate = usually problems)

Almost universally the guys I know that live here in furnished apartments and have little in the way of physical assets (cars, houses etc) are happier and have a lot less stress to deal with. I recommend living here and trying rentals in several different areas for at least six months before buying if you feel compeeled to buy.

San Pedro is a great place to live, yet close to the gulch. craigslist is not a bad place to start, or google apartments in Costa rica by area. a little spanish could probably get ya 10-35% discount. BK Tuna's suggestion of 6 months is spot on and not having to drive, pay for gas, worry about Transitos beomes addictive after awhile.....

Renting first is your best bet versus buying for sure. You may find you don't like living there and then you are stuck trying to sell.

If you change your mind and go with renting, look in the Classifieds here. The Dunn Inn has just put 2 apartments on the rental market. Talk about close to the action!

I've done a cursory search on the net for rental properties in CR and have been universally disappointed in what I found... The rates have most likely been jacked to gringo rates and who knows how many hands are being greased in the transaction, along with sub-par accouterments ... If or when the time comes, I'll rent short-term while having my feet on the ground to search for a more permanent place...

The appts that Boyd mentioned he had for rent in another thread do sound about ideal... 1 bedroom, all utilities, furnished, ready to move in for $650 a month...

There are several places that have been mentioned from time to time on different threads. Do a search and you should find a lot of info.

Someone made a wise suggestion to live here for a while before you invest.

Check out the site www.encuentra24.com. They have a lot of listings and it is not as much bs oriented as craiglist or Ticotimes ads. It will give you an idea on rental and sales prices

There is no down side to renting first.

Here is another example of why you may not want to BUY an condo in Costa Rica.

I live on the top floor of an condo building so the roof of the building is directly above my unit . It has taken the homeowner's association over a year to get various roof leaks fixed and now they are having to remove and replace the entire roof.

They did NOTHING for the first year. I had to get lawyers involved and stop paying my monthly dues before they would even address the problem.

It can't be said enough that it is much different buying is Costa Rica than it is in the USA.

Renting = Happiness, Fun, Games, Opportunity.

Buying = Pain, Sadness, Pressure, Anger, Regret.

Brother BKTuna's mentioned Website currently has 450 + "For Sale" listings. If you insist on buying, happy hunting--many of them are pricey though.
