I often bring my unlocked Samsung I7500 smart phone or my one of my
other Tmobile smart phones phones to CR or MDE. When calling the US I put the phone
on airplane mode then power up the wifi. Then make calls through the google voice.
This is handy as I only give out my Google Voice number anyway. The calls in country are all done with the local sim.

Most people get the cell to stay in touch with wingman, friends, and chicas locally (in CR). Magicjack is great to call the US from abroad, but does nothing for calling locally (within CR). The rate for calling the US by prepaid SIM is about 30-35¢ per minute. MJ costs $20/yr. For $20, that's about 60 minutes to the US by prepaid SIM. So, if you call the US a lot from your hotel room, MJ is still cheaper in the long run. If you make the occasional 3 minute call, prepaid is probably the way to go.

The other factor is mobility. You can't take the magicjack outside the hotel.

Well not very far anyway unless you're gonna hookup to another computer and a cell is the way to go for local calls. In The DR I had my cordless base on the balcony and the phone down by the pool and bar one day with my cell # forwarded to my MJ # making & recieving calls from the states. I think I had to explain how it worked 10 times that morning.
