Hey, I resemble those remarks!

I think they miss a good full service strip club like Crystals in the DR. They have a few clubs but nothing with the selection of Crystals. Plus although Crystals prices are high by DR standards they would be average in CR.

Per Bilko, vagrancy laws. Also:

1. Manhole covers and sewer grates
2. Police presence to thwart serious crime, rather than to harrass gringos.
3. More live music options (and decent musicians to play at them).
5. An "urgent care" VD clinic for nervous mongers
6. Another monger-friendly hotel with a pool and/or a thermas atmosphere.

With an excellent sushi bar next door (this idea courtesy of Brother Srilm).

Hotel Europa, which is chica freindly and located in the heart of the city, has an outdoor pool. Word on the street has it that the biggest problem with an outdoor pool is the temperture. It never gets hot enough for a long enough time to get the pool water to a comfortable temp. The cost of energy in CR is expensive so artificially heating the pool would be expensive.

how about using solar energy to heat pool water.

The Hotel Santo Tomas also has an outdoor pool and in all the hours I've spent occupying a bar stool at Harry's Bar Poas across the street with a clear view, have never seen it used.
Brother C'dude is on the money about solar heating--it would make a pool usable for cheap. Not easy maybe but certainly doable. Of course getting said solar energy array setup would require imagination as well.
BTW, the Hotel ST is not for Our Crowd--just mentioned for the record.

When I lived in Taiwan, we had a neat option. Something I see few other places. Would love to open up a club in the CR or LOS like it. Basically it is a two story building. Ground floor is a British pub. Can be a different menu, but the pub concept is quite popular. Upstairs is a dance club. A mix of nights with bands and dj's. All the latest technology. Those who eat in the restaurant get a special VIP sort of staircase to use to get into the club. Those that just go to the club use a different entrance. The tables and booths are wrapped in a U shape around the stage and dance floor. Appetizers can be ordered from your booth with a phone that links directly to the kitchen. And of course the club has a full bar. Sound neat? In Taiwan it is called Pig and Whistle.

MrLV,
I have a potential job opportunity in Taiwan for three years. I have never been to an Asian country and have no clue if I would like it or not. I would be leaving my family behind and going solo. I will be traveling quite a bit throughout the Asia Pacific region and would have opportunities to monger. I was wondering if you could give me some feedback on how life is in Taiwan.

Thanks
Steve h

Life in Taiwan is not bad, if you are single. Lots of well educated ladies eager for Western boyfriends. Lots of air pollution in Taipei, especially near the airport. But that is slowly disappearing. Good expat community. A few specialty stores for Westerners to buy hot dogs, mac and cheese, bologna, chocolate, etc. Gringo food. Not a bad life and a great jump off point for Asia travel. If you are a techie type, money should be good. Make sure you have a firm contract before you go, though. Any questions, pm me.
