On balance, I agree with almost everything my namesake has said. But, I do understand the need for food that is comforting to you as a person. In my case, once a week, I got to have Indian, Tex-Mex, Italian, Thai, and Pizza. By the way, what are the details of the authentic mexican soda?

Soda "el Chavo" is located on the corner of A14 and C9 on the NW corner (straight down from the REY 8 blocks) and about 3/4 block before the Pantera Rosa. Very limited, but very inexpensive menu. Three tacos with a choise of beef, chicken, or pork is c1200. Has the best fresh fruit drinks I have found in CR (c600). OH, and be careful with the guacamole--it is not what you are probably use to in the states--they usually have 3 different hot sauses on the table and the guacamole is the hottest by far. I love it!!!!

One additional thought on the "wanting American 'comfort' food places here"!! There are several members of CRT who are in the resturant business (BBQ, Southern cooking, Chicken, Italian, Chinese, etc.). Several have even talked about the idea of opening a place here but non ever have (actually a couple have tried but did not last long)! Wonder why? Could it be they realize it would probably be very difficult make a profit here??? But I realize that does not keep people from wishing they (American "comfort" foods) existed here.

Now Brother BangBang57--see what you've started? Let me be second and ask about the steak places--was that Donde Carlos or La Esquina de Buenos Aires or both you were talking about? WTF, you might as well go ahead and put names and locations to all you mentioned. Don't want to be thought of as a tease, right? LOL
Now back to looking into the eyes of our TOW, Anna--what a sweetie!

Abandoning all sense of reality or financial viability or practicality for that matter. I would really dig it if the Gulch had an outdoor basketball court ( indoor would work to ) and a batting cage.

Wake up on a Sunday morning with a low grade hangover and still half amazed that I just spent night with a beautiful Costa Rican woman. Shower and head on over to the batting cages with the fellas' to foul off some pitches for a while and talking smack, recalling last nights events, lying about how I wore that ass out last night for 45 minutes when I was really only good for 15 minutes.

Now that we got the blood pumping swing by the the basketball court for a few games of 21 ( the low impact kind for 40 and over guys) I'm in Costa Rica the weather is nice, beautiful women at the ready, feelin good, f**k it, play a few half court games with the younger cats, I'm that old dude shooting NBA three pointers (low impact but killin' em ) now tired and sweaty we head back for a shower and post up at the SL for drinks and lunch - meet a nice little shorty, we go the room 30 minutes of foreplay and I put my 15 minutes of work in and than its afternoon nap time.

Please guys do not take this the wrong way -- it is just the way I have always felt about traveling.

Why do so many people want to travel to far away places to see and do things they can not see and or do at home, then complain and or wish for what they had everyday at home!! Come on guys, GET ADVENTEROUS AND TRY THE LOCAL FARE!! Open your minds to something besides meat and potatoes (or pizza or texmex)! There are many extremely good sodas and resturants here where you can get fantastic food for very little money-try something besides the same old thing everyday. Hell just south of the REY and in the Soladad area (area that includes Relax, The mansion, Las Gatitas, San, etc.) there is a truely authentic Mexican soda owned by a Chinese/Tico couple (they lived in Mexico for 20 years), One of the best fish and chiviche sodas anywhere, 3-4 good pizza places, An Argentina Resturant that serves great stakes (Argentine meat) at a reasonable price, A dozen places where you can buy fried chicken that is 10 times better than that KFC garbage (JMHO), 2 outstanding (not in my opinion but many think so) Chinese Resturants, At least a dozen sodas with fantastic food (casadas with drink for c1700-c2500), AND at least 2 places that have good hamburgers. Problem is most of these places are Tico, not American fast food places (familiarity problem with a lot of people). They are not 4-5 star places. And they do not look modern, clean (sometimes), and enviting to most gringos. And they usually are spanish only (menus and speaking)!! For me I would rather have even the lowest looking of these over the typical fast food place in the states. But that is just me! I like to be adventerous and try different things (including the chicas-jejeje)!!!

The title of this post is each person's opinion of what is missing here. You have made it very clear that you like MP girls and sodas. That is your taste and your "opinion". That is not missing here so you don't feel that those are missing from the gulch. You really don't have anything to add to this post topic of what the rest of us see as missing , in OUR opinion.

Not everyone is "traveling". A lot of us are here for years and hardly ever leave. So "experiencing" and learning the local flavor we have done that and are quite aware what IS here.

Heres the thing that gets me is posts like this one that tries to clump all guys in the same group AND assumes because someone lives in a certain area, they need to CHANGE. Not everyone wants to eat every meal at a soda or a roach infested pizza place like C.d.Sol.

In the states I didn't live in a slum and I don't care to here. In the states I didn't eat every meal in a un ventilated or un-air-conditioned restaurant and I don't care to here. I've worked hard all my life and continue to do so and want to enjoy some of the same comforts no matter where I live. That is my opinion.

When I lived in Taiwan, we had a neat option. Something I see few other places. Would love to open up a club in the CR or LOS like it. Basically it is a two story building. Ground floor is a British pub. Can be a different menu, but the pub concept is quite popular. Upstairs is a dance club. A mix of nights with bands and dj's. All the latest technology. Those who eat in the restaurant get a special VIP sort of staircase to use to get into the club. Those that just go to the club use a different entrance. The tables and booths are wrapped in a U shape around the stage and dance floor. Appetizers can be ordered from your booth with a phone that links directly to the kitchen. And of course the club has a full bar. Sound neat? In Taiwan it is called Pig and Whistle.

Actually, Boynton already came up with that response way back on Thursday (ie well before even JMS).

The gulch is missing a noise ordinance, and some vagrancy laws.
