As much as I agree with Brother Prolijo and other's wish list, mine is more modest: a cigar bar that offers good, inexpensive cigars and rye whiskey
(excellent ventilation a MUST for the smoke-aversive Brothers).

I only stayed when I HAD to, yet spent many hours hanging with local bar talent. How about ventilation at Hotel Morazan. If nothing else, for the common good of the ticos/ticas that work there (fat fker ricky ricardo excluded). I smoke and that place is not fair.

A small Italian "hole in the wall" deli/restaurant where you could get Philly specials like pizza, Philly cheese steaks and hoagies made with Boars Head meats (or Dietz & Watson for a real Philly touch) both served on a Amoroso Special Hoagie roll. And since I am dreaming add a canolli to top it off. :D :D :D

I vote for the notion of a BJ bar.
For anyone familiar with Thailand; a lolitas like theme.
Straight fee of say 25$, pool tables and small bar to hang out in. Maybe a couple of big screens. Have the girls circulate around a bit and lightly mingle but not pester.

Seriously my life would evolve around Lolitas if I were to live in BKK. So chilled, so relaxed, and yet so assuring.

A good default, consistent, restaurant with a range of items and prices.

An American style Mexican restaurant would be great.

Not looking to be combative here but--SAY WHAT?? What's the problem with a good Mexican-style Mexican restaurant--or Texican or Mexitex? Taco Bell already exists in CR, doesn't it? I admit to considerable confusion in this.

Please guys do not take this the wrong way -- it is just the way I have always felt about traveling.

Why do so many people want to travel to far away places to see and do things they can not see and or do at home, then complain and or wish for what they had everyday at home!! Come on guys, GET ADVENTEROUS AND TRY THE LOCAL FARE!! Open your minds to something besides meat and potatoes (or pizza or texmex)! There are many extremely good sodas and resturants here where you can get fantastic food for very little money-try something besides the same old thing everyday. Hell just south of the REY and in the Soladad area (area that includes Relax, The mansion, Las Gatitas, San, etc.) there is a truely authentic Mexican soda owned by a Chinese/Tico couple (they lived in Mexico for 20 years), One of the best fish and chiviche sodas anywhere, 3-4 good pizza places, An Argentina Resturant that serves great stakes (Argentine meat) at a reasonable price, A dozen places where you can buy fried chicken that is 10 times better than that KFC garbage (JMHO), 2 outstanding (not in my opinion but many think so) Chinese Resturants, At least a dozen sodas with fantastic food (casadas with drink for c1700-c2500), AND at least 2 places that have good hamburgers. Problem is most of these places are Tico, not American fast food places (familiarity problem with a lot of people). They are not 4-5 star places. And they do not look modern, clean (sometimes), and enviting to most gringos. And they usually are spanish only (menus and speaking)!! For me I would rather have even the lowest looking of these over the typical fast food place in the states. But that is just me! I like to be adventerous and try different things (including the chicas-jejeje)!!!

BB57, I agree with your post as it relates to visitors. However, I do not think that residents who eat in local sodas and restaurants frequently should be chastised for wanting a little bit of food nostalgia. If you notice the two requests for pizza and Philly cheese steaks come from residents.

If you go into an ethnic area of any good size U.S. city you will find a couple of restaurants serving the food of that particular ethnic population. Not because they dislike or do not eat American food but rather every once in awhile they would an enjoy a meal that they grew up on in the "old country".

You are right and I should have made that more clear. But the vast majority of the posts on this thread have been by people who visit here not that live here. And very few of the gringos who I know who do live here ever visit the "American" places that are here (McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Quiznozs, Windys, KFC, Hooters, TGIF, etc.)

On balance, I agree with almost everything my namesake has said. But, I do understand the need for food that is comforting to you as a person. In my case, once a week, I got to have Indian, Tex-Mex, Italian, Thai, and Pizza. By the way, what are the details of the authentic mexican soda?
