I can guarantee you this will never happen. Investigate a little further and you will understand the reason for the agreement. The US Navy only has a total of around 300 vessels in the total fleet. Including subs, etc.

The worst aspect of this is having 7000 horny sailors competing for the chicas. It could make it a seller market.

Don't worry. I'm about to retire and I've been working for the Navy for 37 years. It ain't going to happen. This is a update of a previous agreement. We would never put a large number of US troops ashore in Costa Rica unless there was an invasion from a bordering country. Then it would have to be under UN or OAS provisions. Simply ain't going to happen.

Here's an update. The constitutionality of the invitation is being challenged by the opposition Christian Socialist Party.

Meanwhile, according to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S.S. Iwo Jima is scheduled to arrive in Limón on Aug. 20 as part of Operation Continuing Promise with about 1,000 sailors, 500 marines, 150 doctors, 50 engineers and 100 volunteers. They will primarily be providing medical assistance.

English (sort of):

The comment section of the story seems to indicate that most, but not all, Ticos think it's a good idea.

Exactly! Today Venezuela severed diplomatic ties with Colombia, an 'ally' of the U.S. I think Chavez is just as dangerous as the 'nutcase' in North Korea.

Articles like this make me wonder why we are paying for all these solders to roam around coasta rica. We need to cut our military budget in half.

It's getting deep in northern South America. Here's a short Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/24/world ... venez.html
Another factor at work is an outgoing President presenting a pressure situation to his successor in Colombia, and Venezuela getting increasingly testy with Curacao, accusing them of letting the US use the island as a staging point for some upcoming invasion. Hoo boy.

I hear there is a big whorehouse in Curacao. Mostly Venezuelans.

The true reason why we are at odds with Venezuela and North Korea. The elite (bankers) doesn't control their money supply. Only 2 countries left and thats them.

This is one of the biggest crack of shit of American politic:

1. Bring US marines here to fight "the war on drug"? - These young K*ds are most likely to increase the drug demand in this country.

2. Laura Chinchilla played the ultra-conservative Catholic card to get the votes, now these troops deal she orchestrated and tried to sneak past the public eyes (showed up 2 minutes in the news, one small article in the news paper in Costa Rica; did not even make the news in the US). Like Estebanh said, this is just going to increase the demand for the working girls, which means more prostitutes, and with higher price tags. Even a farm animal can figure that out easily (sorry Laura, if you've already tried).

3. Phuck the problem US had with Venezuela -
a. US should play GI Joe somewhere else, somewhere like Puerto Rico, which is United States' bitch, or play the dirty game in someone's back yard (see Guantamo bay). Don't come ruin Costa Rica. We left US to come here for good reasons.
b. Had problem with their president? Doesn't that sound familiar? I bet Venezuelans can't wait for the US to "bring democracy to their country". "Operation Enduring more BS" perhaps?

4 I agree with Bigwavedave, US needs to cut the military budget. Problem is that military and offence (let's stop kidding ourselves and call it "defence") industries are the BIIIIG-time money makers in the US, money swings votes, and US is a "democratic" society,...so, good luck seeing the change.

The only reply I'll make to to Brother User69's rant is to say he is obviously not aware of the scrutiny and testing modern squids and Marines undergo, not least from other squaddies. And if caught seriously dirty, they don't go to that country club in Kansas but Portsmouth Naval Prison. No harsher prison in the US--none.

Acknowledged.
I did not know of any strict measure amongst US military for drug use.

Brother User69--And your source of knowledge is what? I have a brother an office pogue who was busted out of the Navy 30 years ago for drug use (HeathenDevilHerb). You want me to believe it's gotten softer since then? These guys might lightly abuse alcohol but except for the super-savvy that do PowerFlush daily, ain't no serious abuse going on.
