BTW... I get along just fine in shorts and flip flops. Even in the fanciest establishments. My money is green (well often red and blue), and I tip well. No Tico could ever say shit to me about respecting customs. We are talking about people who use the side of the road as their personal garbage can and who treat their pets better than their maids.

I agree with every thing BK has said here. Yes, the raids are more frequent lately but it does seem to go in cycles (hope it does this time) The raids do not in anyway seem to be aimed at gringos. They had reason to take one in and did not! By almost all accounts, they have been nice, courtious, and friendly. In a couple of the places the chicas hassled them and they apparently got upset over that. Several of the chicas in Relax told me it was nothing at all out of the ordinary other than a female (dike) lesbian cop (acording to the working chicas) getting angry when they teased her about being a dike. I also agree that in many ways, in the long run, the raids might be to everyone's benefit!

No one has had any problem in these latest raids with having just a color copy of their passport and entry stamp. My friend and I handed the officer our plastic enclosed copies, they ran a check on ours and everyone else, then handed us back our copies and thanked us for our cooperation and left--never any question as to whether our copies were ok or not.

BB, I wasn't taking any chances. I was staying out close to the airport in Cariari and thought what a nightmare if they did. I keep it pretty tight to me when I carry it though.

I'm not so sure that there isn't some change going on. Maybe it's just low season, but the first week of July, the HDR seemed to be lacking in Colombianas. Juan Valdez Corner was only occupied by chubetts. I don't recall seeing any of the high styled chicas of the past decade.
Could be immigration or just vacation time for paisas.

Thanks for your advice and pov. I am going to bring jeans this trip and see how it feels to try and "blend in". I'm also going to see if I can have the same luck you seemed to have at mansion the other day.

Their have ugly, bony legs. And they are 4 feet tall, so on them, shorts look like flood pants.

Guess it's all a matter of perspective, huh? I can hardly ever wear long pants at the beach, so I actually enjoy wearing them along with a nicer shirt when I'm in the city.

Brother Scuba...I have had the exact same observation. Some have returned to MDE although they usually depart in big numbers in December for the Holidays.

IMHO the Colombianas that frequent the HDR are smaller in numbers. Especially, if you are looking, like me, for some new talent landing in CR.

Some of them have divided up the working hours. It seemed that when I first arrived in CR most of all the hot Colombianas never showed up at the HDR until 9 or 10 pm depending on the night of the week.

Now, you will see a few of them working the 9am - 2pm shift, then a few more the 2pm - 8pm shift and behond, then the late night crowd, For me personally the saddest part is that there are some here that are the same I first checked out back in '07.

Of course, do not let me paint a horrible picture here. There are, and always will be, a lot of very hot-looking Colombianas at the HDR (y a veces KL). I just love the fact that, imho, there is a completely different set of rules-of-engagement when searching for their A-game and/or TLN's, repeaters, and such....

Politness, deference and humility goes a long way when dealing with police who are just doing their jobs. After all, they are like all other working folk, just trying to get through their shift.

I did get caught in a raid the only time that I didn't have a copy of my passport nor any other ID. I do speak Spanish, so I conversed with the immigration fellows. Even if I didn't, several spoke English. I made it a point to apologize profusely, over and over again, and swore on a stack of bibles it wouldn't happen again. And it hasn't.

I was stopped once by the transito police and asked for my passport. They reviewed and then I went on my merry way. I was waved at the officers in the paddy wagon last night around 1 AM, and they honked back. Their are human beings inside those uniforms, trust me.

Tourism is a big part (but not the only part) of Costa Rica's economy. But in a sense we are ambassadors of our countries too.

Every year things are slower after July 4th and before Labor Day. The Ticos have school vacation and lots are gone to the beach. The rainy season is in full stride and more guys do not come down and local guys stay home more. I have not seen any real difference from the last few years.

exactly. i like this post a lot. if you think about it, tourism is a big industry for costa rica. it would be rather negative for them to go around demanding papers from tourists all the time. i've lived here 6 years, and i've only been asked for my passport at the bank, COSEVI, and when i cross borders. not one policia has ever asked me for papers. i've been through numerous checkpoints; i've been in a few raids, and never asked for anything.

i remember once when i went up to guanacaste in my jeep, and a transito stopped me, just to talk about my jeep and his landcruiser that he had (he was also a fan of 4x4s). they're nice people. normal humans, who have to do a certain job. i always treat them with respect, and i am always given that same respect back. i guess the 'golden rule' is still deeply embedded into me.

give me the cr cops and cr can have miami beach pd, aventura pd, and georgia state troppers. yeah that sounds fair.
