We are talking about Mexicana Airlines, right? Not AeroMexico.

Srilm, I really appreciate your insight as an ATC, I only have the perspective of a passenger but I have had positive experiences on both Mexicana and Aeromexico (maybe it was the free beer), but never on flights to other locations than Mexico, and not recently. Your rating of the various airlines and their competency was great. I hear they are still operating Soviet-made planes out of Cuba, but of course not to LA. I would really have to be smashed to fly those.

An update on info on Mexicana:

Spoke to a Canadian who flew Mexicana (seems to be Western Canada's best buy) and has lost luggage and had lock broken off (not TSA as the flight never lands in the US) Reading their website, luggage loss limits are around $400.

Another consideration is that their website says charge to/from the US is first checked bag free, second bag $3.50/kg. As their weight limit is 55 lbs, this would be a 22 kg bag cost ~$75.00. I booked when the second bag was $40.00, copied the web page, and thought I would have to argue it at the airport. The service rep asked another and he quoted the price, but she didn't charge me for the second bag.

Mexicana's current fleet consists of A318 10, A319 25, A320 28, A330 2, B767-200 2 and B767-300 2.

Aeromexico's current fleet 737-700 27, 737-800 7, B767-200 3, B767-300 2 and B777-200 4.

I can find no data that either airline ever flew any soviet built equipment.

It was always my dream to fly between Lviv and Vladivostok on this plane: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupolev_Tu-144
Another fantasy smashed.
