I'm flying Sansa next month to Quepos. Haven't done that in about eight years. Just how strict is Sansa regarding the baggage limits? The website states that one small laptop/camera bag is allowed as a carry-on, and one checked bag is allowed per passenger. The checked bag limit is 45 total inches (LxWxH) maximum, with a 25 pound maximum. Will they allow my checked suitcase on board if its total dimension is 52"? Apparently they charge $1 per pound over the weight limit. Apparently they allow surfboards, so how can they enforce the dimension limit?

As long as safety regulations are met (bags not blocking the aisles, etc.) this is airline's discretion. You are at their mercy. If a surfboard exceeds the dimensions they can just say "surfboards are excluded from the dimension limits". Your best bet is to check directly with the airline you will be flying to see if it's OK, how much you will be charged, etc. Look at Spirit charging for carry-on bags. It's a free-for-all (except passengers, who will not be carrying bags for free, apparently).

I don't mind paying extra, as long as the extra fee is not exorbitant. I just don't want to get to the airport, and have them tell me I can't fly because my suitcase is 7 inches over the limit. But, as I learned many years ago, nothing surprises me in CR.

Another thing to consider is the total weight of you and your baggage. Skinny twits like me (currently 165 lbs.) can bring gold bars aboard--some of our avoirdupois-challenged brothers might be asked to leave their luggage or even shoes behind. You could always find a small person and make a side deal, exchanging luggage for the flight (hey, this is CR--near about anything's doable, right?)
