Bang-Yes some people go down with a i'm better than you attitude however i'm not one.I also cannot control what anyone thinks of me or americans. When i said i'm proud to be who i am it was not an insult to anyone just stating a fact.As for dress if the locals are offended by me wearing jean shorts or jeans with sandals or sneakers i will live with it.I respect there country, culture and laws but remember there culture is not mine.I'm a tourist doing tourist things and spending tourist dollars. When i go for my walks(all over) i do not feel any animosity towards me.In fact the service i get has improved with each trip the only difference is i now understand more spanish and can speak it a little better which is to say hardly at all.Yours and others advice/suggestions will not fall on deaf ears.

 Remember, I'm quoting and highlighting YOUR words.

Brother Mike -- I admit to being sarcastic. It is a great failing of mine which I strive (but often fail) to overcome. For that I apologize.

All I am trying to accomplish here is try to open your eyes to a different point of view which might enhance the quality of your experiences overseas.

I know you have said you respect the country and the people and so forth.

However, IMO in this thread you are pretty much saying the following: "Screw it, I'm an AMERICAN on VACATION and I'm spending MONEY so these locals better put up with me AS I AM and they better LIKE IT, else by my Gawd Given Right as an American I'll take my money ELSEWHERE".

I mean, this is how you're (and others) are coming across here. Yes, we have our own culture. Does that mean we have to forcibly export it to every country we visit, like McDonald's franchises?

I respect the fact you (and others) have a different opinion. Just don't expect me to agree with it or to keep my opinion on the issue quiet. I'm sorry it disagrees with yours but that's life.

As Brother JazzBo mentioned, both sides are talking past the other. TEHO.

Forget all the other advice here and just remember this: When you take off your slacks/jeans/shorts, put on a condom.

MH-dont expect you to agree with me and yes they are my words .Its your interpatation of them that i disagree with.I never would go anywhere with that kind of thinking(screw u i,m an american ETC)In fact i dont know how you could come up with that out of my posts.I just did a quick check of the crt photos with or without ticas. The vast majority show guys dressed much like i do.I can appreciate good sarcasm so have at it flame me whatever i can take it.Hell i might even learn someyting (doubt it) :D

Sorry hank but i dont feel the way you or your friend hiker tom does.Where does it say that by dressing different from you or HT makes us dumb ass tourist gringos. The fact that i and others dress a little more casual than you does not mean we are disrespecting anyone or a country.I/we are there on vacation and spending/contributing to there economy.Trust me you guys dont blend in by dressing up.I see many people from other countries and guess what they dont try to dress like americans or try to fit in.They do enjoy themselves and for the most part show respect. Some of you guys take this mongering thing a little to serious, without money these girls would not even consider going with you-dress does not matter.

Remember this whole conversation was about being in SJO. When at the beach, dress for the beach; when in town, dress for town. And hey, don't get me started on the slobization of the US--I don't wear shorts or T-shirts when doing errands there either.

I like wearing my purple pimp hat and 12 " yellow glasses. I got a matching purple shirt and a set of grillz teeth to enhance the outfit this time around. I call it the "Inner City Look". :D

" most of the girls down here, lie as a self defense mechanism and to not have to face the truth, thinking most men couldn't accept them knowing the whole truth. Simpler, they may just want men to think they are as perfect as they want to appear to them, trying to hide what they consider to be the ugly truth about themselves. And I may be reading more into it than is there, but I do believe they consider the basis of the lies to be justified."
