No what we are saying is that AA no longer flies non stop to SJO from FLL.

You may have spoken but I ain't buying your pitch. AA may be the worst of the major carriers, and that is debatable, but they are far better then nickle and dime you to death Spirit.

Price spreads on both airlines for basic fares are: AA $119>>$182 and Spirit $85>>$153 The taxes and fees are obviously the wild card

If those numbers are correct and do not know where you got them them AA from MIA is cheaper then Spirit from FLL. Remember there are no seat selection fees, no checked bag fees (for the first two), no carry on bag fees, no fees for soft drinks, coffee, tea, water on AA. There are fees for all those things on Spirit and those fees are not cheap.

Oh right. I see.

I'm far from an expert on anything in Florida, but unless AA was able to consistently fill the SJO-FLL flights at prices similar to what they get out of MIA, then it was smart of them to consolidate flights in the area to their hub down the road.

Regarding AA, I don't consider flying on UA or US Air to be a bowl of cherries either. If I was to rank the major domestic airlines, my subjective opinion would put them in this order: Continental, Delta, AA, UA and finally US Air. I put AA in the middle because I haven't used them as much as some of the others, but they haven't screwed me disproportionately either.

If AA decides they have to join in the merger madness and buys US Air, I would not even consider flying them unless there is no other reasonable alternative. Adding awful to mediocre will not turn out well.

The discount airlines are in a separate category. I have found Southwest and Alaska to be well run. JetBlue was good too although it's been a while. I have no experience with Spirit but would not fly them now considering all of the new fees.

I haven't flown in over a year, so things may have changed...

The fares I quoted (for the same days) came directly from each airline's Website. They make it damn' hard to directly compare...and the wild card is accessibility to the first-leg airport, parking fees there and other externalities. I'm committed to Spirit through the end of 2010; then it's a crapshoot.

That might be your wild card but what we are comparing does not allow use of wild cards or jokers in the game. It's all about this:

I suggest following daily fares on Kayak or sidestep.com or any other mega searcher. The pricing of airlines changes constantly, sometimes daily. I book through Chicago and take the train to Indianapolis but check the one-way airfares. I booked for $60.00 last time, but AA changed to smaller regional jets so the fare is double this time.

Train costs $19 one-way.

I take the flight that gives me the times I want for the best price. I don't care what line it is. Although that varies, recently most of the times it's been AA.

I think AA sucks. But then I am comparing it to the service I used to get while flying. That type of service is never going to be again. So I put up with it.

That's called lowest common denominator or defining deviancy down. It's such an overwhelming concept in everything nowadays. Not right, not wrong, it just is.

AA does play games with its fares from MIA - SJO. I keep a fare alert on weekend flights to San Jose, and the prices can get ridiculous -- during spring break they were AVERAGING around $ 550 r/t.

However, I never have paid more than $316 on AA MIA-SJO r/t (taxes included). I just bought a ticket at that price for my next trip.

BTW, I'd rather eat a meal at Mi Tierra than fly on Spirit.

Here's my two cents. If you want to get to SJO the cheapest, or MDE, fly Spirit out of FLL. Today's flight to SJO from FLL was cancelled; as was the return to FLL from SJO. Due to the possible strike of Saturday. Since AA pulled their SJO flight out of FLL you must go to MIA to fly them to SJO. For Colombia you can get to Bogota from FLL on Avianca (on a Delta codeshare) but it is not normally cheap. And if you want MDE you need to connect. MIA offers a couple options. I really do not care for Spirit and have vowed not to fly them ever again; my wingman flies them as much as possible due to the price. So if you want to get to SJO cheap (that is your stated goal) look to Spirit out of SJO but do not overlook AA deals out of MIA. Play with the dates. $400 is too high unless it is peak season.
