No, you've got that backwards "Novia" is the GRINGO MONGER word for "Puta" and they just BELIEVE her when she says she works as a "modelo" rather than a puta. And the TICOS can only DREAM their putas and novias could even TRY to be a "modelo". Have you seen the women some of these poor local guys go with? Except for the Tico elite, the true "modelos" won't have anything to do with any of the common Tico because they don't have enough money.
