just curious, has any member of the board ever suffer Dengue fever?

recent report in InsideCR paper on Panama province bodering CR

Recent rainfalls have pushed up the number of reported cases of dengue in Chiriqui. So far this year the number of cases of Dengue has more than tripled. There have been 77 cases brought by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

A regional Ministry of Health in Panama report projects that the number of in the Chiriqui province, will grow especially as the epidemic that affects Costa Rica increases the risk in the border provinces, such as Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí.

The Ministry of Health in Costa Rica reported that until the May 14, there were 5.900 cases of classic dengue, of which at least 400 belonged to communities bordering Panama.

It was hoped that this year the Chiriquí cases of classic dengue would fall but, until mid May there were, 77 were confirmed, against 24 in the same period last year.

Its spread by mosquitos and it is as bad as or worse than a killer flu like Swine Flu. It can be fatal but usually isn't.

A buddy of mine from school picked it on some extended trip to Thailand. He ended up getting sick to the point they wouldnt let him fly back home, and he was essentially trapped there, useless as can be for weeks just rotting away.

He eventually got over it presumably, as he is back here in Canada now. But damn must be some nasty shit.

Asprin (ASA) affects the blood platelets ability to clot during bleeding episodes. Dengue is a bleeding disorder type viral disease... hence the no asprin treatment.

Dengue is all over the country, including the valley. I 've done a quick search of the info, and it's confusing.

First, you can have dengue and not the fever. Usually it is a mild cold/flu reaction. Not sure if you build immunity since there are at least 4 different viruses. Apparently you have to have two of the viruses to get the fever. The four viruses make vaccine searches difficult, as the vaccine might trigger dengue fever.

The fever is called breakbone fever because that is what you feel is happening to your bones. It is a very small percentage of those who are exposed. It is survival, but neurological disorders and other bad stuff happen.

The Egyptii mosquito is the main carrier, but other types may carry it. It's not like malaria which is transmitted as a parasite, the dengue virus is incorporated into its DNA and passed on to future generations of bloodsuckers.

What to do...Egyptii's are agressive daytime bloodsuckers. I've encountered them waiting between hanging clothes in my closet just before daybreak (staging areas) and massacured the bunch (it was for my fellow family members, as for some reason I was distasteful to mosquitos for two years.) I'd kill 50 or so.

The good news: my friends were bitten at night, dengue was present in Aserri, but no one I knew there had dengue fever.

I go to the rain forest, swamps, woods, mountains, beaches, etc. Use mosquito netting in heavy areas. In San Jose, I sleep with a sheet, and have a fan blowing over me (mosquitos don't fly well in a current). Out in the woods, DEET.

My worst experience was with chiggers on the Carribean coast....like a dumbass I went out in the early AM w/o reapplying DEET (thinking my previous day's application was enough). Two weeks of pure hell.

Use good sense. I'm more concerned about getting bitten by sand fleas at dusk on the beaches as they can carry parasites.
