I stayed there in April. The easiest is to go from the Blue Marlin side exit (towards Monkey Bar) and take a left, go 100 feet, and enter the Colonial Casino. Go through the hwole casino and exit out the back door, through the parking lot (gated/secure), and into the hotel entrance.
Perfect answer. I pulled my pepper spray directly in front of the "large white gate" between the Del Rey and Chubbs when two trannies approached me. I have no doubt they were "up to no good". In my humble opinion downtown San Jose is "very dangerous" anytime but especially after dark.
I was told the Ladrones are now using cell phones to text information on potential gringos to rob. Example....see a drunk or old or tourist gringo flashing money in the DR or KL...watch him or them leave.....text their buddies.....bang...they got you!
I know that the best solution is to avoid putting yourself in a dangerous situation, and this goes double for the brothers who are older and/or loaded w/$ or booze. I'm average size for an American, good shape, younger than the average CRTer, and don't drink a lot. If a couple of low-life's tried to mug me outside the Del Rey, less than a block from my hotel, that would just piss me off. I know it's the wrong answer and not the prudent thing to do, but I couldn't accept giving up any valuables in that situation.
That said, it's best to always be aware of your surroundings and to always have an idea where trouble could come from. If you look out the door and have even the vaguest feeling that you are being targeted, use another exit or just walk with some of the other guys heading in your direction. Predators prefer prey that is separated from the herd.
The same inner voice that tells you whether a chica is interested in you or not for a better than average experience will let you know about safety too. If you haven't developed that through experience, then stay with the herd.
