Just a follow up on the cell phones recommended by brother orange. I bought a SLVR L6i. $53.00 and it works great. I also bought a cheapie recommended by Amazon, a motorola F3. It,s a dog. Don't buy one. It's cheap $20.00, but iot's money down the drain.

$53 is a good price for a good unlocked phone. You could always give away the other one as a propina.

$53 huh? :P

If anybody is looking for a Motorola L6, I just bought one for my wife for CR through Ebay. The guy is in NY, close to me, so we did it off Ebay and I picked it up from him. The total (incl shipping) is $33 (I paid $25). He's got more models/colors, look at his page:

http://cell-phones.shop.ebay.com/Cell-P ... 11.c0.m282

It may say "open box" as mine did, but it is new (some are refurbs-read the listing), came in original box and all accessories. The L6's are European versions (tri-band 900/1800/1900). For CR, 1800Mhz will do. Verify with any seller that it works on 1800. The menus come in English, German, and French.

Here's the L6 I got: http://cgi.ebay.com/Motorola-MOTOSLVR-L ... 35a9ce53b1

I have used this guy 3 times to rent a cell phone in SJ. Very reliable and had good experience.

META Rent A Cellular - Mario

$ 4 per day PLUS $ 1/minute for all calls (whether local CR calls OR USA calls).

$ 250 deposit..

Not only is this a rip off, but this guy is currently trying to screw me out of about $300. I used a credit card to pay, and he jacked up the price on me, AFTER I signed the form. I'm disputing this with my cc right now; it's been going back and forth for 6 months now.

This is an important lesson: always keep a receipt for some kind of documentation of your transactions when using a credit card, or run the risk of this happening.

If you rent a car, ask them for a cellphone, they are cheaper, and they (proly) won't try to screw you.

Does anyone know the website to recharge SIM cards? An English site would be helpful. Thanks!

I found the website and it is back on-line but when i try to create an account I receive an error message. I have emailed the service group from the site requesting a user account...I will let everyone know if this works.

My Motorola RAZR from Newegg.com cost me $79 & works just fine. Calls to the US run about 30 cents a minute. Pick up the SIM card at the ICE booth at the airport & recharge there or online from the US. I call my US voicemail once a day & return all my calls from my RAZR/ICE phone; it comes through as "unknown" & I just tell my clients it must be a cell tower issue. No problems to date.

I now call my novia from the plane once I land, just like a local....

They're still selling the RAZR's. I just picked one up at a local Factory Direct electronics store for $49 - factory refurbished with warranty. Figured it would be a cheap way to have a cell on my next visit to CR and I might just give it to my novia when I leave. She has a habit of throwing her phones at her sister :)
