After reading a few posts talking about the falling value of the dollar, I'm wondering if right now we shouldn't be changing our dollars to colones but buying everything with dollars? Any thoughts on this?

Take the time to calculate the number of colones it takes to equal one cent and then ask the question again. :)

Actually the exchange rate is up somewhat this week but is really fluctuating: c503 to 1 a week ago; hit a high for a very short time of c560; then dropped to c520. Yesterday I got c534 at Service max in Hypermas. Today at BCR it was c535 when they opened. By 1 pm I got c525 :( (knew I should have gone to the bank before going to see Jannette at la Mansion :D :?  ). Then later I was in MasXMenos and notice the Service max was giving c539! Damn I should have gone there again today. :(
As for your question about using dollars, some places will not, or are reluctant to take dollars. Those that do will always give you a much lower exchange rate than the bank rate. About the only place where it does not make much if any difference is with the chicas who will almost always figure it at c500 to 1. Living here, the ONLY thing I ever pay with dollars is my rent (owner requires that it be paid in dollars). Not only is the exchange rate going crazy lately, but so are prices for many comodities--Eggs have almost doubled in price in a week!!! Noticed that 2 stores had Baileys on 'SALE'??? for more than the regular price was just 2 weeks ago. and just a month ago both these stores had it on sale for half what is is now!!

I personally would not use dollars to pay for anything here!! Even with the chicas, if she asks for c40000 and you pay in dollars, she will want $80 even though at c525 it would be $76 so you are loosing $4 in the deal. JMHO!!

Plus another minor thing--you have to be so careful of US currency's condition--one little tear or mark and they'll refuse it. CR currency can look any old way and they'll take it.

Servimas uses the Scotia Bank rate. The 539 yesterday was the rate to buy dollars not colones.Scotia usually keeps a 12 colones spread between their buy/sell rates.

Sorry ID but this time you are wrong, at least for the MasXMenos I was in!! The sign very plainly said c539 and c551.

Well, give Brother ID style points for getting the buy/sell spread right, even if mistaken on the particulars.

Guess I should use the Servimas you use because the one in Hipermas in Escazu uses the Scotia rate which yesterday was no where near the rate you got.

I know I'm throwing sh1t in the game but "right" and "wrong" are moral positions. How about we go with correct or incorrect, or valid or invalid? Yeah yeah I hear that all the time--so few friends because of it.
