When I come in on Tuesday I had a similar experience. I was hussled over to a chica with a clipboard. I immediately went for the closed window where I always paid. She informs me that they are closed and she will take care of it for me. I asked "how much to Escazu?" She replies $25-26. I say "WHAT" and she calles over one of the drivers. I complain some more and she just shruggs hes shoulders. Then another guy says "I'll take you to Escazu for $20. "You're on....let's go" So in front of the rip-off taxi with accomplices off we go. In the taxi he writes something on a pad to cover his ass. Obviously he was a portadore. I predict a war at the airport very soon.

This is why Costa Rica will always be a 3rd world country, they can't even figure something as simple as an airport taxi. There's always a hustle.

If the window is closed, I just keep walking right out the front door like I have a purpose, search for the first "official orange" airport taxi driver I can find (they usually stand right outside the door) and walk right up to him. Eliminates the rip-off potential. You can identify them by looking for the blue wing-looking thing logo on their shirts. It will be obvious because there are a lot of guys wearing the same shirt.

Are the orange shirt guys still hanging around outside even though the "official" window is closed?

Let me ask a question. Is it normal for the cabbie to ask for your passport # at the airport?

There is a contract taxi service in CR called portadores. They are not allowed to cruise and pick up fares. They are suppose to provide service only to those who have contracted for their service in advance. It sound like the guy was a portadora who was trying cover his butt in case he was stopped by having a slip of paper with your passport information to show you had contracted with him in advance rather then being solicited at the airport. I am not sure this was the case just throwing out a possible explanation for what otherwise was a very strange request.

Thats exactly what it is, I had it happen to me, and had to wait for a guy to come back with a piece of paper with my name and passport number on it. I had read about it here, so once we were leaving the airport I saw the paper, figured out what was going on.

I always take Interbus for about $20 round trip. I learned to lie about my return flight so that I don't end up at the airport 4 hours before departure. :D

Thanks Slim for that piece of info. I was wondering if they really check the airline schedule or just take what you tell them. I need to lie about both flights because I want to get money changed and get a sim card at the airport when I arrive - don't know how long those guys will wait, so I'll add 30 minutes to my arrival time.

Costa Rica Shuttle or Interbus?

What is your recent experience from airport?

Is there a long wait at the airport like Super Shuttle in the US?

Do they drive you around a lot dropping off people or is it pretty direct to the downtown hotel?

Within 10 seconds of walking out the airport door I had a private cab to the gulch for $25 US. Should be a non issue.

Book through Costa Rica Shuttle (they contract with Interbus). If you pay with PayPal you will have a recourse if there's a problem. On my trip last month, after getting my luggage, I went to the departure side to exchange some money. When I went back outside the arrival area, there was a guy there holding a sign with my name. I didn't see him on my way to exchange money, but he may have been there. He called the van to pick me up. It was about 5 minutes for the van to arrive. I was the only passenger so they took me directly to my hotel (Dunn Inn). Overall, very good experience and I will be taking them again when I arrive on the 19th - all for $9.50 each way. I tip the guy with the sign a buck and the driver about a buck and a half.

Costa Rica Shuttle and presumably Interbus lists an extra $9.50 charge for "extra luggage". Has anybody with checked luggage actually been charged this? How much extra did you bring?

They charge extra for surfboards and if you have more than 2 pieces of luggage.
