The proper Costa Rican way to say this is: Puedo regarme en tu boca?

A Spanish learning question. I just spent a week in Cartagena with my girlfriend and her cousin and I have got to admit that I came away very disappointed with my progress. I basically did the three levels of Pimeslur I, II, III as well as Spanish plus. I did a year and a half of once a week private 1 hour lessons. Out and about town, in hotels and restaurants its fine but in person to person conversation I got to admit it sucks. It was very frustrating. Comprehension of what people are saying to me is a real issue particularly when the start fast or if there is a word or two I'm not familiar with. When I work on this stuff I take it very seriously and always do the work in advance of the class.

So I guess the question is what is the next step? How can I get better Comprehension? The only people I know that have learned Spanish as a second language have either lived in a Spanish speaking country for a solid period of time or learned it in a university setting neither of which are an option for we.

The girls don't want to teach Spanish Its embarrassing - anyone have any suggestions

There is really only one way, practice. You can only learn comprehension by hearing Spanish speakers, by talking in Spanish, whether at home or in a Spanish-speaking country. Or even by watching Spanish shows, but they speak pretty fast for a beginner. It's frustrating in the beginning, but just hearing the sounds will help.

Aye... Vocabulary and speed are the last to come. Do NOT be afraid to ask them to speak slower. I have no idea how many times I have asked that.

Because if you speak ANY Spanish, people seem to feel free to speak as if you are a native.

The Spanish TV is a great idea.. out here at least... If you can watch TV and get the gist of what is going on then you are on the right track.

2 nouns in Spanish that are exceptions, el dia (not la) and la mano (not el). Otherwise, if it ends in "o", masculine, and, if it ends in "a", feminine.

my first wingman sent me this, how true

" most of the girls down here, lie as a self defense mechanism and to not have to face the truth, thinking most men couldn't accept them knowing the whole truth. Simpler, they may just want men to think they are as perfect as they want to appear to them, trying to hide what they consider to be the ugly truth about themselves. And I may be reading more into it than is there, but I do believe they consider the basis of the lies to be justified."

There are many more than those two. El sistema, el problema, el idiota (la idiota if your talking about a female), el idioma to name a few.

Most of the time, it's safe to assume that o is masculine and a is feminine but you have to really make an effort to hear and understand what people are saying. It's not enough to pick out 2 or 3 words of a sentence and then figure out what they're saying...try to hear every word and understand why it was used in the sentence.
