Thanks K-Paxian, I was just about to open a new thread asking about open air bars, but you answered my question. I like to enjoy a beer outdoors, on occasion.

Another great place is the NY bar. They have a patio (very small, only about three seats) on the street, and there's a bus stop right across the street. Great place for chica watching!

There's no shortage of open-air dining/drinking places in that area. For starters, how about El Patio at the Balmoral Hotel which is right across the street from the News Cafe and the Presidente? Then, on the same side as the News Cafe moving down that street in the direction of the NYB and HDR, there is the 2nd floor dining area of the Mariscar Restaurant and Bar. And, back across the street from that, for dining at least, there is another small 2nd floor seating area (w/tables) where you can take your lunch that you can purchase at the food court of the Plaza Venida.

Yeah, spent an hour on the patio @ the NY bar last week havin' a drink & a smoke. You definitely get to encounter the fringe elements of sjo society both inside the bar & walkin' up & down calle 9.

How does the fact that the Hotel is a Clarion affect the situation? I have no knowledge how the affiliation with an international chain can affect the hotel's outcome. Surely the parent company isn't happy with a hotel shut down by the taxman.

The Clarion affiliation is a marketing franchise agreement. They are not a parent company. The owner is in all likelihood not paying the fees and is running out of rope on the marketing arrangement.
