I use to check bags, but never again.
After trying the carry-on only thing, I loved it and will never look back. I now have the mentality that I put out everything I think I will need, and if it doesn't make it in the bag then I repack. I will not cave in

In all honestly I never understand the pro of the carry on brigage at first. I mean for a few extra minutes wait you get to pack alot more and not be all restrictive. But after endless waiting for baggage to come off the carousel, lost bags, having to keep an eye out for some smooch trying to take my bag thinking its his, and the general hassles of carry it around or down the street it just wasnt worth it.

I can now get off the plane, breeze through customs and immigration in most cases and be in the taxi in like 15 minutes.

Key phrase to remember--"...up to $45 for carry-on..." Spirit can try this because they are essentially a leisure-travel airline. A business-centric airline won't do this--their customers wouldn't stand for it...unless it becomes the modus operandi for all airlines. There's another Thread which discusses this issue but here's the WSJ reportorial take on it:
