I have policy of almost never giving money.
Only when I see an old and or crippled person that is not begging
and I can see that a little help would really help.
The others I will only buy them food at a soda
that I pay for personally.

If you give money to any street begger and any others see you do it
there radar goe's up and they all sceam there's a GIVER and
THEY ALL come-a-runnin.....
You end up a "marked" man that evey time they see you they will be in your pocket....

I really hate how the little basturds hound you when you leave the D.R. w/ a Chica in tow.. They know a lot of guy's are most vulnerable then..

Be strong my friends it may be hard but I believe it is the right thing to do.

I think giveing money to beggers is like feeding pigeons in a park if you just give a little ,there will be alot of birds there. If you give nothing sooner or later the birds go away and find bread some where else. I would rather go to a restrauant and buy some food and see the K*ds eat it would make me feel better than thinking that they give it all to there parents who are back at the home place waiting for there prodigies to come home, only to feed them who know's what.

Just my 500 colons worth... and by the way I think I will keep them too...

Believe it or not, even beggers have an unwritten code of ethics that only one Begger to a Gringo at a time

This is true,

The Hugo Boss guy is Jose.
You should see all the knife and broken bottle scars
in his neck and back.
.
He has some stories to tell.
And you can get a good shoe shine to-boot ....
He is an O.K. guy..
Just eiking(sp) out a living the best way he knows...

Begging is just too easy to make money for alot of people. One early morning in front of the bus terminal in nyc, I was standing by the door drinking a cup of coffee. Within five minutes someone threw a handful of change in my coffee :D. You should of seen the look on his face when I called him an *sshole and poured my coffee out. After thinking about it for a minute I knew I needed to get back home to shower and shave after an all nighter in the city. Some people are born to give.

I definatley agree with you guys about not encouraging the beggars. But the reason I give them change is I hate carrying around change in my pocket and those colones are some big honking coins.

TorontoGuy,

Just a suggestion, leave the coins for your maid...

At least she is working hard to make an honest colone.

You are only "promoting" the beggers to continue...

Just a thought, Nucknfuts

Bombero...I felt so bad that I bought him a new Lexus. He keeps it parked around the corner.

In most other respects, I thought the Pres was a great place to stay on my last trip. But having to deal with the whole aggressive street scene in the gulch on an almost constant basis was just too big a pain in the ass. This time I voted with my feet - and am very much enjoying my stay at the friendly, comfortable, and still very conveniently located Sportsmen's Lodge.

I brought this thread back specifically for Senor Prolijo's 2nd post. If anything, there's more misery now in the world. But is the beggar problem still as bad or maybe worse now in the Gulch and around the News Cafe/ the Prez?
